A question for the experts out there. The glass has a slight amber tint to it, and I wonder if it has thorium like the highly regarded chrome-nosed concave front element SLR lens. Is that why the RF lens is so sharp?

The 58mm F1.2 in FL mount is listed as Radioactive, ie Thorium. I suspect that the 35mm F2 preceded the use of Thorium by Canon. The Thorium lenses use the radioactive glass on the inner elements, so you are well shielded from the emitted particles.
Just do not disassemble the lens and lick your fingers.

No the amber you are seeing is the coating This lens has an Amber coating. That's all the only Thorium glass lens as far as I know is the 35mm f2.0 in FD mount the formula with a concave front element found in the chrome nose and first S.S.C. versions of the lens.
The 35mm f2.0 RF is sharp the good old fashion way. same as it's fast brother the 35mm f1.8 which I have and find to be an exceptional little lens one of my favorites both have the same basic formula and I would guess they are very very simular designs.
