I really enjoyed shooting my Canon 35/1.8 for a couple years, until the front focus became very loose. It would move out of focus while taking the picture, unless you held it with your finger. I put it aside waiting to send it in for a repair. Silly me, I didn't realize until last week, all it needed was the back to be screwed in, with a spanner. Voila, it's back to normal!
I see lots of posts about the 35/2.0, but few about the "slightly faster" 35/1.8. I haven't shot a side by side comparison, and I know they are supposed to be different designs (7 vs 6 elements). It just seems the 1.8 is an outstanding sleeper.

The 1.8 is fairly soft wide open, probably softer than the 2.0, but I don't find that a bad thing.

It is an excellent lens, but that flares in night lights. Lisboa, Portugal at night. I had this lens checked out and cleaned for any internal haze. I sold a like new Canon 35/2, but I kept this one. For no flare photos, I use a Summicron 35/2.

Nice photos, Raid! The 1.8's bokeh is much smoother than some samples I've seen w/ the 2.0. However, if you point the 1.8 at a light source like a window, or the lights in Raid color photos above, it displays a sort of blooming flare. The photo below needed a lot of postprocessing to get the flare under control:

I love all your shots! I have a 35/2 but I am starting to like the 1.8. Actually I'm eyeing one right now. Canon ltm lenses are underrated but they have their own way of taking photos, if you ask me I find them beautiful.

Wide open with a lot of lenses I see flare if I'm shooting directly at bright lights at night, or large windows in a dark room. I notice that the 1.8 gets a lot less so if I stop down to F2.0 or F2.8. I pretty much never shoot it at F1.8 anyway, it's my daytime lens so it's usually pretty stopped down. The BMW motorcycle shot at the beginning was at F4 I believe.

I don't remember having any real flare issues with mine, but it was a clean example.

I shot the 35/1.8 wide open a couple nights ago. Yeah, there's some flare, but I still like it.

Here's another I took in a dark restaurant at night at f1.8 or at most f2 at 1/50@800 iso on the R-D1.
I sold this lens when I got my 35 'lux. I'm now starting to wonder if I did the right thing

Nice shots, Garrett and Astro! There's a thread around here somewhere that compared the Canon 35/1.8, the 35 lux, and some other 35s, and the Canon held its own. Here's a bw sample from last weekend:
