I recently picked up a free Canon 50/1.8 from my local photo shop. Got it for free because the shop owner doesnt know much i guess and i pointed out the inside of the barrel is in disrepair and not worth anything. So he gave it to me, but anyway my question is.

Is this lens worth fixing. There is oil on the aperature blades, and the ring is tough to move. The inside of the barrel has some of the black covering sticking out. Looks like the covering on that piece of the barrel would need some repair as well as the blades.
The glass looks fine front and back and the outer cosmetics look ok. I think it would be a good user lens if the two problems mentioned earlier were fixed.

So has anyone seen something like this on their lenses and do you know how much i'm looking at for repairs.

Thank in advance.

If you pay for a repair, it is going to run ~$70 or so. The black is probably peeling paint. The lens needs to be opened up, disassembled, and CLA'd. If you can do it yourself, it is a great price. If it can be repaired, it is well worth it. I would have an estimate done.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I guess i'll send it out. I remember reading on one of these forums about a reputable guy in South Carolina, USA that can do lenses and LTM stuff. Anyone know his name?
