Canon 50mm/1.2 M39 mount worth $125

I can purchase a canon M39 thread 50mm/1.2 lens.

Everything looks and works fine. There is a mark in the center of the front element. Small scuff (chip)

$125 too much????
I don't know what the lenses sell for in good condition..

I am the one trying to do 35mm for travel....
 
The shop let me buy it to try out... and said I can return it if I don't want it.
I will post a digital photo of the front element
 
I'd buy it. There are a lot of things that can be done to mitigate that kind of problem.

Here is a photo of the front scuff....

It is near the center of the lens..

If I had a M39 to M42 adapter, I could shoot some test shots with my digital... I need to get one of those
 
If it were just a single small chip in the middle, you could fill it with black paint to stop any flare. That looks more like a scuff which wouldn't respond to this. It could still take good photos but it is likely to be more prone to flare. If the rest of the lens is in good shape, I would be tempted to get it if the results are OK. With a bit of luck you might come across one with a ghip in the rear element at a similar price and make one good one out of the pair.

ahh...looks pretty minute to me....I had a 55mm micro that a friend of the family used when he was in the peace corp the lens was worse than this....but boy was it sharp...but you never know till you shoot some film...shoot some film and figure it out...but from the looks of things I would say you got a deal! Congrats

I doubt that little scuff will have much affect.

More importantly, shine a flashlight through it and look for signs of internal haze. The surfaces on each side of the aperture blades can get oil-covered on that lens.
 
The front element of my 50/1.2 has a bigger mark than that. It is not centered like that, but bigger. Get a good hood and enjoy, she will work fine.
 
I once had a Hasselblad CZ 80mm f/2.8 lens with a minor chip at the center in the rear element. Didn't notice it affecting my pictures at all.

But when I looked through the viewfinder with strong light in the scene, I noticed there was some veiling flare. Just to check whether I was being too an*l or not, I went back to the photo store, and asked to compare it with another one that was flawless: no veiling flare.

So, you won't notice your pictures being affected by it unless you compare it with another one, and whether little minute details like that bother you or not.

That said, at $125... whoohoo!
 
I just shot a roll of Kodak 100..
I will get it processed tommorow.

I am not really worried about flare.
I just want it messed up if it was dropped...
