My newly purchased lens with the above problem. The grey ring turns independently of the focus ring and I can find no grub screw or other to determine how to get it to reattach. The only Youtube video available does not continue to show dismantling of the focus shell and I am afraid of causing more issues by bumbling a repair.
First photo shows internally there are four vacant holes (N,S,E &W) drilled into the black plastic. I don't think they secure the distance ring but they appear to have screw marks as viewed with a loupe. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think that is plastic- should be aluminum.
It looks like someone removed the screws and glued things into place. The glue is not holding.
Return it if you can. If it was so cheap that it was priced like a parts lens, try to find some videos.

Thank you, I was suspicious that someone had played with it. It cost around $US100 and the glass is beautiful and it does focus properly so I'm inclined to keep it.
Cheers
