Hey RFF,
Sorry to impose upon but i wonder if I could tap into your vast knowledge base. With that said, my canon lens aperture has hit the bucket- losing its click stops and just being continuous from 1.4-22. I know it is a problem because I can hear the screw bouncing around in it. Secondly the focus is a lot stiffer than I want it to/think it should be, so I need to find a way to lube it. Does anyone know where I could get it CLA'd (cognizant that I am located in Southern California)? Alternatively, how hard is it of a DIY project?

Thank you,

I've seen here a series of photographs where someone repaired click stops for 50mm/1.4. Can't find it now, I'm sorry.

My black Canon 135/3.5 uses a ball-bearing, held in by a screwed in metal strip. I seem to recall the 50/1.4 is the same way, but been years since I took one apart. I suspect the ball-bearig fell out.

The helical disassembly is not as easy as a J-3 ot Leica mount Sonnar, but is not too bad if you are used to doing CLA's. It could also be that the bearing fell into the works.

The optics module is held in by a retaining ring at the rear. Use a spanner to take off the retaining ring, the optics module comes out as a whole. That will let you size things up.

I've cleaned and lubed several of those.

Take the rear span ring off and remove the optical barrel from focusing helix. Don't loose the ball bearing while you do that. You will see how the aperture works and you can fix it. To lube the focus mechanism you have to take it apart from front to back, start by removing the big black focus ring and you'll see.

Any normal repair shop can fix that. Check with Stephen, Tony (both in Southern Cal), or Don, for instance.

Roland.
