My Canon 50mm f1.9 will not collapse into My Canon L1. The lens tube hits a baffle on the bottom inside the camera. I Know collapsible lens are an issue on the Canon 7 but did not realize they were on earlier models. Is this normal or does my lens have an alignment problem?

Normal. To quote from a PHOTRIO posting by “Trask” ...
“I've got a number of LTM cameras (Canon P, L1, 7s, Leica III), and a couple of 50mm lenses (Summarit, Elmar). While I can use the collapsible Elmar on the Leica and collapse it when not in use, I can't collapse the lens on the Canons because the collapsing mount hits internal baffles inside the camera.”
... which says it very succinctly. (My Elmar 50/3.5 can, with extreme care, wiggle past the baffles in my Canon P.

A good solution is to wrap a thick rubberband, or a ring of plastic tape, around the lens barrel to prevent the lens from retracting far enough to hit the baffles.

No problem with the lens. None of the faster collapsible lenses will collapse into the later (series V and up) Canon bodies, at least without tweaking the light baffles. f/3.5 collapsibles will usually go in without too much difficulty.
