It is interesting to c that these two companies maybe going in different directions w/ possible next gen sensors. I guess it is who they feel is their real competitor.

The Canon patent is foveon like while the Sony one is more Fuji xtran like.

The real question is if anything real will happen and we c a product from it or not..

The impression I have is that the various companies generally have lots of potential new sensors technologies in 'the works.' Most of these technologies don't go anywhere, or allow the company to incrementally improve their bayer-based CMOS sensors.

It's important to temper expectations with the understanding that dramatically different technology would come with a similarly dramatic investment in manufacturing. Those kinds of costs will slow adoption of even the best technology.

I tend to agree, which is why I always comment about seeing light of day or any real product when ipodt about patents.

I have worked in enough companies that have pure research arms where a small percentage of those patents end up in real products.

I would also say a lot of patents that are put out there may never c the lot of day because that said company is really not interested in producing the technology in question, but instead, the patent is there for protecting its future goals.. Which may include licensing to preventing others from using as well as the goal of eventually creating a product off of it. And if nothing else protection against patent trolls.
