Hi,
I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago, in the leather box they come in and very nice it seems too. This post is, however, an attempt to find this particular shop in the USA (California?) that was selling a similar lens for $8000. Yikes.
All I could think was that I was very lucky to get this one before the seller saw the advert for the other one and adjusted his price somewhat.
I think the shop might have been something like camera lux, but I can't find it again, but perhaps someone here will be able offer some info.
Andy.

What you're stating is not possible. On the high side the 35mm f/2.8 lens with viewfinder and case will sell for $325 or so. The lens alone will go for about $175.

The f/2 version of the 35mm lens alone fetches $400 or so and is optically superior. I own this lens and it is an outstanding value. The Canon 35mm f/1.5 version will sell for perhaps $800. Possibly this is the lens you saw for sale, but at $800, not $8,000!

There is only one Canon LTM lens that will consistently break the $1K barrier, the 50mm f/0.95.

There is one guy in California who sells old Canon gear for greatly inflated prices, but even he doesn’t come close to selling a 35/2.8 for $8,000.

You may say it's impossible, but that was the price; there was also a Nikon F wiith a 50/1.4 lens for about $4000.
With all respect, nasmzombie, I posted requesting some info on the shop, not to be accused of not knowing what I'm on about; so, if you have nothing positive to add, find another post to troll. Actually, instead of being so negative, spend half an hour on google and see if you can help. You'll learn something as well if you find the shop.

Rather than call me a troll perhaps you are simply mistaken. As I stated, there is one Canon LTM lens that will consistently exceed $1K. I have yet to meet anyone who's memory (or reading comprehension) is 100% accurate 100% of the time. Perhaps you saw a special edition Leica lens for that kind of money while perusing the site. Or perhaps there is a Canon LTM prototype lens for sale for big money. Rest assured the lens model you purchased is not for sale elsewhere for $8,000 USD.

I own several Canon LTM lenses and have a good idea what they sell for. I did check eBay just to make certain my valuation numbers were accurate. Many of the Canon LTM lenses are of excellent quality and are cheaper alternatives to Leica lenses, and I use them as such.

There is one seller that I'm aware of who prices photo items rather exorbitantly. He has both a California based operation as well as a store in Japan. The business name is Kevincameras. I've exchanged emails with Kevin but in reality he prices items in the manner that he does because he's more of a collector than a seller. He has quite a few rare items and prices them accordingly. Kevin may have a mint copy of the lens for sale for $800, but not $8,000. His prices are often 2x to 3x over fair market value but not 100+x over!

Lastly, no one else in the thread is agreeing with the premise of your original post. Also, at present over 90 users have viewed the thread and did not comment.

Andy, I’d have had the same reaction if you told me some used-car dealer was selling a 2005 Honda Accord for $100,000. Some things just don’t make sense.

Well, to be fair, it's possible that someone could list a Canon 35 f2.8 at $8000. It's even possible that someone would be foolish enough to pay that much for one, but very unlikely. But if that person's out there reading this post, I've got a really good f2 version I can let you have for only $10K. A full stop faster for only a 25% price increase- Bargain!
If you get back to me within 24 hours, I'll even agree to swap it for your near mint M9.

Cheers,
Dez

My Canon Serenar 35/2.8 was a little over $200 (Back in December 2016, so fairly recent). So I would be surprised if I saw a copy well over 400 even in mint. Unless there was some obscure black copy or something...

PS: Love the 35/2.8 , really sharp in the center even at f/2.8, sharpens up on the edges around 5.6~8.

The one I have cost £220 here in England 3 weeks ago. I was stunned to see the prices on that site, and now , of course, I can't find it again!
It isn't Kevin cameras, as the photos of the lens I saw were taken looking down onto a wooden table.... luxcamera or something.

Andy.

The selling place is called ''chapterlux'' One 35/2.8 just sold at $2,280 ! Lots there if you have money burning holes in your garments.

I just checked out their website. Amazing, just amazing. $7,000 for a Leica CL with a Summicron 40/2.0. $21,000 for a chrome 0.58 MP. I'm shaking my head in disbelief.

I just checked, and Kevincameras has several mint examples for $800 (and quite a few other examples for less). As I stated, Kevin is often 2x to 3x fair market.

As for Chapterlux, they are located in Hong Kong. It would seem that their prices are based on the Hong Kong dollar. A $2,280 HKD price is approximately $300 USD, which would be about right.

Duh. I wondered the very same thing about HK$ once I realised where they were. My sincere apologies to all for the wild goose chase. I'll get me coat.

No need to get your coat, at the very least this was entertaining. And reinforced my beliefs about Kevincameras. His prices really are out there.

Never heard about that before. Does the shop have the same name in Japan?

I also have bought from Kevin. The items I bought were very rare, such as a Kenko Refbox reflex housing for Contax. You just have be selective and negotiate.

There are other Canon LTM lenses for over $1000. Really good 19mm f3.5 lenses are over $1000. 85mm f1.5 lenses are rapidly approaching $1000. Many of the longer focal length Mirror Box lenses are now over $1000. The holy grail, the Type 1 and Type 2 800mm f8 lenses, are the most expensive Canon LTM lenses. The partial lens in Peter Kitchingman's book was at Pacific Rim Camera over a decade ago and probably sold in the $3000 range. I have never seen another one for sale.

In the early 2000's I purchased a lens or two from Kevin, and exchanged several emails with him about some other items on which he would not budge on his high price. He mentioned at the time that some of his inventory was in Japan. He either had a store in Japan, or he was sourcing some inventory from Japan.

I've not had any interaction with him since. He does have quite the collection.

Kevin's inventory in the US is not in a shop or store. At one time he would allow you to pick up equipment that you bought in his office; you could just manage to step inside the door. The office was relatively small and literally jam packed with equipment; the equipment was not displayed or even able to be browsed. The office was in downtown Los Angeles. I don't think he allows local pick-up anymore. Kevin's command of the English language is not very good. I also think he works out of a location in the Far East now; I don't know if it is in Japan.
