i was reading several auctions and reviews of this camera and the problem that came up most was the availablity of the battery. if i were to buy one of these cameras what can i do about the batteries

This has been discussed many times under Canon Rangefinders, but basically I've had success using Silver Oxide batteries (376 will fit with a bit of tin foil) and compensating for the higher voltage by setting the film speed 2/3 stop slower (e.g. set to 260 when using 400 ISO film).

There are 1.5v alkaline batteries readily available at any photo shop. They aren't the exact right voltage (1.35v) but they work. I've used them for years in my canonet and other cameras that need the old mercury batteries without any problems.
There are plenty of other options that will work, but I don't have any experience with them. There is a lot of info about this on the web.

I use Energizer 675 hearing aid batteries in my Canonet QL III 17. The voltage is 1.4v. Close enough for any print film. They don't last a long time but they are very cheap. The 675 battery is thinner than the original mercury battery so you need to add some foil to ensure contact and an "O" ring for proper fit. Full details on this here:

As for the 625 batteries (1.5v) I think you need to reduce the ISO by 1/2.

In my GIII QL-17, and Oly RC, I use the "Wein" brand of zinc-air batt's. They are the exact 1.35v, an last considerably longer than the hearing aid zinc-airs. If you go with a 1.5v battery, cut the film speed by ½, and you're good to go. Also, stay away from the alkalines. As they are exhausted, the voltage decreases. Go with the Silver Oxode's.
