Can't decide the FL of my next lens

hi~ everybody,

I'm new here, just got myself the ZI + 50/2.0.

I'm looking for a wide lens and can't decide which one to go with.

35mm/2.0 or 28mm/2.8

here's the digital system I used to have and sold :

Nikon D2H
20mm/F2.8 [[ 30mm / 35mm equivalent
35mm/F2.0 [[ 50mm / 35mm equivalent
70-200/F2.8

I used the 20mm for landscape, 35mm for general shooting. 70-200mm for portrait, birds etc...

I was happy with the 20mm and it was wide enough for me, I need some suggestions here, any input would be appreciated, thanks!!

Longer lenses on a RF are of limited practicity. Get a wider lens: 28/2.8, or 25/2.8. The second one is a bit bigger, but optically it is superior.

I agree with Back Alley. If you have the 50f2 Planar and you want a lens with a wider view - look at the 25f2.8. From a performance point of view it is spectacular - on of the best ever made in that 24/25 mm focal length. However, it is a bit wider than the finder in the ZM (28mm max) so you would need an aux. finder. You can use the ZM and the 25 and "add" to the 28 frame when you shoot. Not ideal, but considering the quality of the lens - almost worth it! Of course, you can also get the 25 finder from Zeiss and be spoiled for good finders forever.
The 28f2.8 Biogon is very good - but not up to the 25mm's quality.
The 50f2 paired with the 25 would give you a good basic wide/normal kit and later you can add either a much wider lens, the 18f4 or the compact 21f4.5 and also go longer with a 85f4 (or f2 if you like carrying heavy stuff).

Thanks for the opinions , I think I will get the 25mm (the price difference between 25 and 28 is small, and as all of you said, 25 is optically superior) and stick with the built-in vf.

I'm really happy with the ZI body, can't wait to develop my first roll of T-MAX 400 🙂

When the Zeiss external 25mm viewfinder is fitted to the Zeiss Ikon is there any electronic connection with the Ikon or is it purely an external viewing device?

they are purely optical. they sit on the hotshoe but there's nothing electronic to make any connection -- just a gorgeous(!!) glass window on a small stand 🙂
