Not that I go about chasing shiny objects, but on occasion I've seen and tried to capture a specular highlight (mostly for the challenge and testing purposes), with mixed results. Anyone else? Any images to show? I've an example below of what I'm talking about. This was shot with a Pen F half-frame SLR, APX 100, using an incident reading, and processed in a divided D76. This was a "roll-ender", but it serves the purpose here.

I got really into long exposures, specular light, and moving subjects. I produced quite a series of pinhole photos in which the subjects seem to be being consumed by the light. It is really a cool effect. Here is an example. There are some more in my "Abernety Project" at: http://www.dominic.lefave.net/pinhole.htm

Here's a couple from my gallery, one just strange, the other more conventional.

Btw, nice photo, Bob. Excellent effect.

Dominic,
that is a nice effect. Was this image made with the camera in your avatar? I remember that you built the lens yourself, right?

No, the camera in my avatar is the Le Fave Super Kabahlucida SKL 300mm/f2 lens and it produces its own specular light! Full information on this lens is here: http://www.dominic.lefave.net/Otherphoto.htm
I have just uploaded an example of the kind of portraiture that the Super Kabahlucida produces and I’ll attach it here. The specular effects that I talked about above were produced with lensless cameras.

I remember both these images too. One for those cool lines of lights and the other for the martini glass. The oof highlights in the latter really dance around back there. Thanks.

This is a very fascinating thread! 🙂

I admit I've always liked the visual result of sunlight reflecting off things like windows, signs, the water, and also that of artificial light. I actually enjoy the rainbows, UFOs, halos and other effects from flare, reflections, abberations, etc., for some reason I find these visually pleasing -- most of the time that is.

I'm a sucker for the sun reflecting off a window or other things. The first 2 below were taken over 30 years apart, and when I see something like this I'll instinctively shoot it. 🙂

For some reason that I don't understand, I like to catch the sun just as it's about to descend behind a building or other object. The light plays tricks! The second 2 are examples, I for some crazy reason I love that red UFO in the center of #4. There are some more UFOs in there if you look for them.

Sometimes, however, it seems like the results are not nearly as brilliant as it will appear to be. #5 below is what happened when I thought I captured the setting sun brightly reflecting off the side of a bridge. It just didn't turn out the way I saw it! 🙁

Oh well ... 🙂

It is a tricky capture, but I think you nailed a couple of them—the first two in particular. I can see flaring in both, which I think helps get that "look," especially the color one, on the sign. Good images.
