Hi All,

For my first post, I'd like to alert you to two exhibitons of rangefinder heroes:

Henri Cartier-Bresson at the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh until Oct 23:

or if that doesn't work:

Andre Kertesz in LA and New York, see this article in The Economist:

I went to see the HCB expo last weekend, it is really worthwile, five rooms full of prints and also interesting photos and info about the man himself. Did you know for example that he buried his Leica before being imprisoned by the Germands during WWII, and dug it up again after his release? I'm sure my Canon would not survive that...

Hope some of you will have the chance to go and visit these expos for inspiration!

Cheers, Panoramix

Erm, maybe I should introduce myself on this occasion...

I've been a photo addict since my early teens. I most enjoy shooting landscapes and friends playing music (with available light of course). Perfect subjects for an RF camera but something went wrong when I chose the EOS 30 over the Bessa R about 4 years ago because the R's shutter was so noisy... I like to do long hikes in remote areas with my girlfriend, and an RF would save a lot of weight. But... scanning film takes so much time, I'd like to completely digital. Maybe it will happen when the RD-2 or digital Zeiss Ikon come out. I really like my Ixus 30 for being small and unobtrusive, but it's all auto with very little control over shutter speed and aperture. The histogram function makes up for some of that though.

I've lurked around this forum for so long now that it was time to sign up. I really like the technical and artistic discussions here and it keeps me from falling asleep in my current boring IT tech support job. The atmosphere on RFF is really great. I promise to post some pictures soon. I like to photoshop/stitch together panorama landscape photos, hence my avatar (from the Asterix & Obelix cartoon, think he's called Getafix in English).

See you around!

Cool and welcome to the site Panoramix! 🙂 I think that CV may have worked on the shutters, so you may want to give a Voigtlander R2a or R3a a try next time you're in a camera store. They should be a bit quieter. Also try the camera with a lens on the front, that deadens the sound of the shutter a bit.

Thanks for posting about the exhibitions. I have the book of the Kertész exhibition and I highly recommend it - link below. I look forward to seeing some pics of those hikes in your gallery here soon!

Thanks a lot, Peter!

You're right, I should try the R2A. Maybe I should get one of these, buy some lenses, and then wait for the digital RF cameras to appear. The EOS 5D is lurking on the horizon (full-frame sensor, finally a good match for my beloved 17-35 lens), so I should watch out and not make the same mistake again as I did with the EOS30. Jessops here in Glasgow sometimes have Bessa's.

I just put three images in my gallery, hope you like them, and excuse me for posting SLR shots in RF teritory...

Cheers, Panoramix

Very nice shots! We've got a running thread somewhere here trying to encourage people to just post RF images so I would go easy on the SLR stuff. 😉 I think its probably right too but don't worry, no-one will mind (especially a new member) posting a couple of SLR shots! 🙂

BTW there's at leat one other member in Glasgow, maybe more so keep an eye out for them!

Thanks for your kind words, Peter! I like your shots of the youth orchestra. It's diffucult to get such shots since there's always too little light, and lots of stands and other musicians in the way. I like trying to get the happy or inspired expressions on people's faces when they're enjoying their playing. Needless to say it seldomly works out... I used to take lots of photos in B&W with my Nikon FM2 when I was student.

No worries, I won't flood the gallery with my SLR shots! I should try and meet up with fellow Glaswegians. I would really like to try out an RF before buying one. You can actually rent XPans here but it's quite expensive. The dSLR route is tempting but I just want to take pictures without being noticed, I'm not one for trying boost my image with 2 kg of SLR around my neck...

Have nice weekend, I'm going home soon (at work now), hopefully I can scan some more shots of my fellow members of the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra for the web site I maintain.

Cheers, Panoramix

Darn!

Panoramix, I really like the avatar. I've been a big fan of Asterix et Obelix... since I was 12! 🙂

I'll be attending a conference in Washington DC this December... I wish they had something going by then, but then, we, in Chicago, have a great luck in that the Art Institute has a show of prints from Paris by some of the greatest snapshooters of the century: Robert Frank, HCB, Brassaii and Kertesz himself, among others... and these are just from the AI collection! I saw it last weekend and was very inspired...

Thanks for the note on these exhibits! And, of course, for your kind words on our forum! 🙂 We take pride in being the friendliest space in the web. 😀

Thanks, Solares!

I also like your avatar, I'm a big cat fan (I mean big fan, although I also like big cats...). Asterix & Obelix are great, I must also have read my first album when I was around 12 y old. Living in the UK as a Dutchman often reminds me of all the French jokes about Britain in the album where they visit the UK. E.g. that they accidentally introduce tea to the English because Panoramix gave them some herbs. But this is getting way off topic, sorry!

I really like being on RFF, and maybe I should finally take the plunge and buy a second hand Bessa R with Ultron 35 1.7... I've got a trip to London and Montpellier coming up, with lots of opportunities for shooting I hope. I've seen a nice offer, I'm not telling where, just need to discuss with the missus!
