Case of the jaggies

I've noticed one or two pictures from my R-D1 which suffer from the jaggies. Jagged edges on diagonals and in a recent picture the arc of a bridge which is dark against a light background. I was using a Leica Summixlux 35 ASPH at the time.

I thought at first that I introduced the rough edges when I resized the picture but I went back and looked at the full size image and sure enough diagonals in the picture are pixelated and jagged.

Is this just an unavoidable digital effect, or is it a problem with the lens or camera?

that would be aliasing, the pixels being square have a finite resolution. You'd have to be looking pretty close to see that though, wouldn't worry about it for prints as a little smoothing occurs, unless you are printing very very big
