I have added an album to my gallery of shots fromt the fire today that destroyed the 150 year old Roman Catholic Cathederal here in Madison. Thankfully no-one was hurt in the blaze, the cause of which is still unknown.

There are too many photos in the album because I'm still too close to it to be selective. Your comments will help me weed them out.

Just off the Capitol Square - on the west side of the outer ring. Its over by a bunch of Meriter Hospital run old folks services. It appears that it's going to be a total loss - they had just restored the steeple this past summer and they fire deptarment says it has to come down - too much damage to not be in danger of falling.

Pherdinand, thanks for the comments. That'll be helpfull when I get a bit more distance. My own church dates from the same era and is only a block away, so this was a bit close to home as well as being a loss to the community.

Dmr436 .... Hehehehehe, Funny .. I sit alone in my study and chuckle .... "Holy smoke" .... hehehehehe, very funny actually
(no offense meant ...)

Sorry if I offended anybody on that. It's a sad event actually. 🙁 For some reason that kinda popped into my head, and I couldn't resist.

I'm pretty sure nobody could be offended by a great humorous line ... it's after all not a reflection of the subject but the content of the humour, which I still find now, about 20 minutes after reading it very funny ....

And of course it's a sad event ....

whahahahahaha

again no offense .....

I thought it was a good laugh as well. I only wish I'd thought of the line first!

Thank you,

William

I submitted some photos a while back to a local paper and they said, "Thanks, but do you have any fires or traffic accidents?" Here's a fire shot I did NOT submit to that paper, but it made a nice 18x24 print for a local group exhibit: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2586721 The cop was shooing me away after I slipped under the do-not-cross rope - better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I tried getting across with a group of legit press - they didn't buy the web journalist schtick alas.

Quite a few dramatic shots William. I like 30,14, and 11 best I think. You can see too from your point of view in some of the pictures that you were just outside of where you wanted to be in a couple shots.

I am sure that is a tragedy for the community. We had a church blow up (propane leak) not long ago. All of the towns other churches, regardless of religion have offered their buildings to that congregation while their's is being rebuilt. Has there been any mention if the building and that steeple can be saved?

In this mornings paper they're saying that the walls and foundation are intact and that they may be able stabilize the steeple in order to remove it until they rebuild. They apparently have good insurances, so we here in Madison are hopeful for them.

Just as an FYI update, a man with a long history of mental illness was arraigned yesterday on arson charges in connection with the Cathederal fire. Local church officials are still debating how or if to rebuild. All in all, a sad chapter for our community.
