CC in use

Hi forum.
Just thought of announcing my full satisfaction with the new(for me) yashica electro35 CC. The 35mm yashinon performs more than satisfactory; the camera mechanics/electronics work just how they are supposed to work. I uploaded already a few shots i took - not a big deal, just kinda "test" shots.
With 100-125 iso film i don't even find the 1/250s max shutter speed a real limitation (so far).

Question: why does yashica-guy say, you should not consider "serious portraiture" with this camera? Because of the 35mm lens? Because the 1/250 s max speed? Because the weird shaped diaphragma opening? or, am I missing something else?

Wide-Angle lenses are not as "flattering" for portraits. The lens makes the persons "nose" out of proportion. A short telephoto tends to flatten out features; the 85->105 lenses are usually the "portrait lenses" of choice for 35mm cameras.

yeah, i know about this 105mm portrait lens -thing, but i don't take it very seriously. Or, not taking it seriously at all🙂 I have made three portraits i am really proud of, so far. One is with a 135, one is with an 50 and one is with a 24mm lens made, all on 135 film. Of course, the 135mm made is much tighter than the 24mm...that helps against distortions🙂 but sometimes distortions fit with the style of portrait. Actually...let's start a thread on this😀

I know at least one photographer from photo.net who would vehemently and aggressively protest against this short-tele-for-portraits rule of thumb🙂

I thought maybe yashica-guy refers to something about the quality of the camera in general...that's what my feeling was when reading his short review. Anyway, thanks for the answer Brian.

I think the Keyword is what the subject of the traditional portrait feels is "flattering"; as opposed to interesting, unusual, different, or environmental. In that context, a short telephoto is going to make (for example) a bride's portrait the most "flattering".

Yes, i agree with your reasoning; i can afford to dismiss these rules only because i shoot for myself and don't care much about the subject's feelings for the result 😀

Ilve said it before about other "rules" of photography, There's always another way of doing it. But what he may have meant for what MOST consider Portrait shots, 35mm is too wide.
Prednisone is a strong cortizone steroid, very useful for many medical conditions and does have side-effects. She's still a cutie.

Long-winded explanation, but learned the hard way...

Prednisone is an old anti-inflammatory drug used for Chemotheropy and inflamation; in Nikki's case it was for ulcerative colitis. On top of the swelling it sets you off emotionally. If you know anyone on it, and a lot of people have to take it, give them some allowance on "going off" at the drop of a hat. You have never seen a toddler throw a temper tantrum until you have seen a toddler on prednisone throw a temper tantrum. It is like watching an Atom Bomb go off.

I had Prednisone for an outbreak of "shingles" a few years ago. Maybe I had a lower dose, but I don't recall any swelling or mood changes. Probably just not cute enough...

Prednisone is a corticosteroid used for various inflamations internal and external. Children (Nikki) and the aged are more succeptible to mood side effects than other patients. I have had it twice some years ago for bursitis of the shoulder. It was given by injection and in pill format for a limited time. The only side effect in my case was a delayed obsession to collect rangefinders, but each patient should be evaluated individually.

Thats it then! I had to give Prednisone to my son for a very bad case of posion ivy a while back, and my dog is taking it now. I bet handling it has caused it to be absored through my skin!

Maybe I should just grind it up, add some water, and inject it 😀 That would accelerate my buying, and I could complete my collection much faster!!!

I hope I would still have time to use them all.
