Color management Basics

Can anyone point me to a simple guide to managing color gamuts and spaces ? I am starting to use a Nikon 9000 scanner, Photoshop CS, and a Epson Photo Printer. I have not figured out which space to scan in, then convert or not, etc., to get a reasonable match between what I see on screen and the print. I would appreciate any help...
