FWIW ..... I just made 3 photos to compare my old X100, the XE1(18-55zoom) and my latest XA1(27/f2.8).
This is not science, I agree. But for your review and personal thoughts, here they are:

My wife will kill me for not tidying up first.

Yeh. At some point I will do another set under a floodlight. Then using a flash. This was the kickoff set, and I don't want to turn this into too much of a science project.
We had a saying way back when .... Every answer generates two new questions / Every solution generates two new problems.
EDIT: This morning(Dec14), I reshot the 3 pictures under a flood light and table lamp. The lighting now is constant from picture to picture.

what did you focus on?
daveleo
what?
I focused on the lamp shade.
I just added a few words of explanation as to what I am doing. They read:
My purpose here is not to examine or compare image resolutions. In my opinion, any modern APS sensored camera will allow excellent 8X10" prints are really good 12X18" prints, so resolution, for me is not a comparative factor. What I am really curious about is how the images "look and feel", and I'll leave it at that.
I do intend to run a few small sets of comparisons, as time goes by, and add them here.

I like the little Dave atop the camera cabinet ("Top of the world, Ma!") in his explanatory pose. It would be interesting to feature Gort and him in some YouToob Fuji tutorials. But what would his voice sound like? He never spoke in The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Maybe he'd just vaporize underperforming cameras after Lil Dave points out their flaws.

Robert, that is a bobblehead doll of me that my son gave me. It has produced a lot of laughs over the years.
Gort.... have to think about his role here.

Updated pictures
FWIW, I replaced the original images with a set under constant lighting, and I also added 2 new images.
Honestly, at this point, the XA1 images have the most attractive look to them (again, all these are at factory default settings, OOC jpgs), and I really like the 27mm lens output.

EDIT: I would like to see an X100 model with a 16Mp bayer filter sensor and a 27mm lens (replacing the current 23mm). Also to note: the X100 and XE1 constructions are clearly more robust than the XA1.

They all look great, I know the XA-1 has the less expensive sensor in it but looks
good as well. I just purchased a XE-1 myself and hoping it as great as they say it is.

I agree. I think the X-A1 flies just enough below the radar that a lot of people completely miss it. It could well be not just the sleeper of the Fuji line, but the sleeper of CSC cameras in general.
Mine arrives Tuesday!

My X-A arrived a day late, but was worth the delay. I really like it so far. Hopefully I will have more to add in a few days.

I wonder if anyone else has experience of the X-A1? I picked one up recently for not too much money and in many ways it's really very good. The controls are very well placed although the plasticy feel is a bit behind the beautiful X-30. IQ seems to be excellent apart from occasional posterization (moire?) in very dark tones. So far I have two lenses: 27mm and 18-55mm.

what?
With a few exceptions, mine is the "poor man's" collection (flea markets, yard sales, donations from friends
).
Cameras are fascinating machines.

Think of the XA as an original X100 (pre X-Trans) without a fixed lens. If you like, or prefer, the original X100 rendering (and a lot of folks do) --now is your chance to try it with all of the wonderful X glass available, not just the fixed 35/2.
