Both lenses are in high demand for their overall qualities in rendering B&W images. It is not just about sharpness.

Overall, like most lenses from the 1950's, it will be a bit soft wide-open but will sharpen up nicely by F4.0. Kodachromes' I shot with my chrome Canon 35/2.8 years back look like they were taken yesterday. Beautiful, saturated colors.
I'd buy the chrome version of this lens just because of it's superb build quality. Chrome on brass and silky-smooth focusing. They definitely don't make lenses like this anymore.

i have the 28/2.8 version Serenar. Its a keeper for sure: has a classic 60s look that I love. That said, I dont buy lenses b/c they are "sharp". I buy them for character. this one not only has character but is sharp as well, providing nice tonal gradation that is distinct, but not overwhelming like I find many new lenses to be.

I can't speak for the earlier Serenar version. I have owned and loved the later chrome Canon version since the mid-70s. I'm the second owner. Lately I have been thinking of selling the Canon 35/2.8 and keeping the Konica 35/2.0.
Difficult decision. Both are superb. Both are tiny. The Canon a bit smaller.

If color images with high contrast is what you want to capture, then a modern 28mm would be more suitable. I would get a CV lens since other brands cost way too much.
