I've been trying to figure out what would be a good fit for me as a second standard lens for shooting street. I currently use a 50mm f/1.2 with my Nikon system, but want something sharper and with more contrast, two things which have brought the Contax G 45mm lens great acclaim. Is the AF system of a Contax G1 adequate with this lens for street conditions, especially at night?

I have a G1 and bought it for night shots. You may find it is just a bit slow to focus compared with your Nikon ( I use Nikons). I belieive the G2 is a much better option in this respect.

Why 45? Why not the 28mm, which provides one with broader perspective? It's one of the sharpest 28s on the market. I agree that G1 is slow in action photography, at least in my use, though some other people swear to its fast response. I would not recommend G1 for street shots due to lousy focusing system. But a 28mm lens would not need focusing and Contax Zeiss 28mm lens is such a great lens!
