Contax G1 focus and shutterlag

Just received the G1, ripped of the packaging and put batteries in it.
Mounted the first lens I could grab and tried some dry shots.

WOW, this is what they call shutterlag.

It takes ages to focus on the opposite window and when I press the shutter it tries to refocus. Then it takes around five seconds until the shutter is realeased, if at all.

Is this the usual behaviour?

Attached is the window I focused on, my G2 measures the distance at 15m

No, it's not normal as you describe it (five seconds). There seem to be two problems: Refusal to focus and release lag. Refusal to focus usually results from a lack of vertical line for the sensor to catch (e.g., a plain white wall), which is supplied by the red focussing aid if one is close enough. The G1 does not have the combination infra-red and passive (phase detection) focus, but only the latter, so there must be something in the nature of vertical detail that the sensor can detect. The manual scale focusing overrides this, but is impractical on account of the lack of drag on the wheel. The fact that the lens has to park itself at infinity after each shot is a big drawback, since it can't scoot quickly between similar distances, but has to start the process all over each time.

The focus is a bit slow, and seems slower because of its noisiness. After fixing focus, the release is reasonably fast, though there is a detectable delay. You'll note that there is a blackout of the yellow information strip at the bottom of the finder, which seems to correspond to the instant of exposure. This is helpful because, with no mirror blackout, you have a visual reference to the exact point of capture, independent of the sound, which is a confused mixture of focus noise, shutter click and noisy advance.

The camera is not up to following the fastest action like the latest pro Canon or Nikon SLR, however if you're using it right you have a problem indicating need for repair or new batteries. There should be no five-second delay. About a half second is what I estimate mine takes from the focussing through release. The time from pressing the release to the shutter opening would be measured in miliseconds, just enough to be noticeable.
Chas.

PS: The window should be fine for focussing, particularly if you use the windowframe rather than panes, where you may have a low contrast issue owing to the reflections with the white slats. I can see where that might confuse the sensor, now that I look at it.

The camera has been heavily used, it's the first Contax I see with film traces on the presure plate!
The seller can't be the one who used it once, he had no other camera gear and displayed it switched on and when it arrived it was still switched on.

Now after a bit of fondling, err training, it seems more responsive. I have it on the BP-8 Powerpack with fresh alkalines so energy should be no problem.

The shutter button seems to be either worn or oxydated. The camera sometimes aquires focus in AF and then restarts focusing as if I'd released the presure on the shutter button.
I have the feeling that it improves with every release of the shutter.

I allready contacted Kyocera in Hamburg to get a quote for the ROM upgrade for the 35mm and a CLA, and tomorrow I'll run a roll through it.

you may try going to the single focus mode as opposed to continues mode by scrolling thru the menu on the top left of the camera

Yeah, that doesn't sound right- even at "1/2 speed" the thing shouldn't take longer than a second to get good focus lock.

Something's amiss.

Careful when you send it back- get everything repaired at one fell swoop or else you'll have to spend an additional $155 (well, US) if your repair depot is like the one in NJ.

It looks as if the shutter button is at fault. I have the camera connected to the P-8 Powerpack on my desk and anoy my coworkers :)

It gets better, I can now focus on most objects in the office and it releases the shutter most of the times. From time to time it looses focus when fully pressing the button after aquiring focus with a half press.

I just heard from the seller that he is an agent for somebody else who bought the camera two years ago at a "professional" store and didn't use it because he had no lens :)

Kyocera service looks good so far, I just got a mail that the ROM Update is free for me.

I think I'll give it a CLA at Kyocera as they have parts for the G1 at the moment and then I'll be set for the next couple of years.

I'd be interested to hear how it goes. The repair shop in NJ took my black G2 for a "CLA" and "Focus adjust." The latter they performed very well- the camera was sharp wide open EXACTLY where I put the focus line. The TTL flash didn't work, though, and when I wanted to send it back, they told me that since I didn't ask for it to be fixed...

Ah, well. Someday, I'd like to have a working G2 kit (in black, if I could) but it seems that my luck with them is just like my luck with ALL other used cameras...

Unfortunate to run into trouble with an acquisition, but it does sound like a trip to your local Kyocera shop for a green sticker/ROM update and CLA would be a great idea for such a well-used camera. Good luck!

Is your shop in NJ better than Kyocera repair service? I need to have mine adjusted.

How much is the cost for adjustment? Can you share with us the shop name and contact info?

It was indeed Kyocera service, officially farmed out to another company. Have a look-see on the Kyocera.com website and you'll have to send the camera off to the same folks I did. I've never heard of anyone else actually working on 'em.
