Conversion A 2x filter

I recently purchased a canon 35/2.8 LTM lens and with it came a Canon 'conversion A 2x' filter - it is tinted light orange and I suspect that it's just filter that can be used with B&W film to increase contrast...

anyone know what the 'conversion a' stands for in Canon filter nomenclature?
