I didn't mean to buy this camera.

I wasn't looking for a Flexaret, I swear!

But there it was, on the 'Bay from a US seller that had no idea what it was. He had an opening bid of $50 and I figured someone would recognize it as a Flexaret VII and would inflate the price to at least $100 or more like the others that have sold.

So I put my bid in, and then 3 days later, I got an email saying I won the unknown "vintage camera" for $50 + $8 shipping.

When it arrived, I was pleased that the camera is in good working order and looks real nice. The lenses have average dirt in them, but no fungus and no significant scuffs, scratches etc.

The shutter works fine at all speeds, even 1 sec.

The viewfinder is a bit dusty, and sadly, it appears that Flexaret viewfinders aren't nearly as easy to clean as other ones out there.

So anyway, now I have this thing and it sits here on my desk looking all pretty....so whats the problem?

I already have 2 other very nice TLRs. My 1957 Yashicamat in near mint condition. Ive already shot film in the 'Mat and it works wonderfully. I also have a really nice 1966-ish Mamiya C33 in very good condition also.

While the C33 is certainly a behemoth, I like that its one of the very few TLRs that can do macro work, and if I ever went crazy, I could swap out the lenses and try something different.

I'm not against keeping 3 TLRs, but knowing theres a chance that with a proper listing on eBay, I could probably double my money on the Flexaret.

It seems kind of odd to use, but I like how the shutter speed and aperture size are set by EV value, which is unlike my other two TLRs. It also has a removable film plate for taking 6cm x 4.5cm pictures. It is missing however, the 35mm adapter that some Flexaret VIIs came with.]

So what would you all do? Logically, I dont need 3 TLRs, but they're all so pretty. Would the money be better used buying something else? (I am currently in need of a M42 lens for my Yashica TL Super.)

Here are two pics of the Flexaret and a third of it sitting next to my Mamiya.

I have 9 TLRs and while I admit they are too many to use all of them regularly, each one has a different lens and thus a different signature.
I love the rendition of the Belar in the Flexaret (I have a Va), you should give it a try and see if you like the results and anyway, these cameras are so cheap that I would not sell any of them

Do you have any recommendations on cleaning the viewfinder? I tried simple air in a can and that only got the stuff on the surface of the lens off. If I shine a flashlight down through the viewfinder and I peer through the viewing lens, I can see that there is a lot of dust and debris on the mirror and under the Fresnel lens.

on the viewfinder you can use very gently a soft microfiber cloth specific for lenses
I have never attemped to clean a mirror.
It's ok for old cameras to show dust and debris if you shine a flashlight through the lens
I didnt know the Flexaret VII comes with a fresnel lens

Good grief eckmanmj, what's wrong with you?

What makes you think that 3 is anything like an adequate number of TLRs?

If you're a newcomer here then those three are a promising start, but you need to make a serious effort. So I suggest that you strap your buying boots on without further delay.

You apparently love TLRs better than the seller and other people around you, so what stops you from spreading the love? 🙂 Keep them all!

Also, as emmef2 wrote, these cameras are inexpensive, so it's not like you're burning your retirement funds on irrational expenses.

Some really good original advice.
Run a few rolls thru, make comparisons to the Yashica.
The Mamiya needs no comparison!
I forgot How BIG it is. Oops and How HEAVY it is. I miss them..
I have been Given a number of camera kits that i never bothered with.
I have come to really enjoy all of them.
I have become appreciative of Canon A-series and lenses, Minolta, Fuji SLR's.
The rendition of the lenses a real eye opener.
The Fuji lenses are really sharp and lovely image!
If "someone" offered me a Flexaret, I'd be thrilled.
Lucky guy!

+3 on keeping it! You can get replacement first-surface mirrors for the Flexaret on eBay, very cheaply priced (I haven't bought one - yet).

What I like about the Flexaret is its svelte proportions and weight. Almost a pocketable TLR, figuratively speaking!

I have 3 mint TLR's (Yashicamat LM with a fine light meter, a Mamiya c220 and a Richoflex Super) and I sleep perfectly ok lol.

I seem to recall a thread here long ago where someone identified a great source for refurbished Flexarets... does anyone know who that might have been?

Keep the camera and love it for what it is!

"I seem to recall a thread here long ago where someone identified a great source for refurbished Flexarets... does anyone know who that might have been?"

Probably "Cupog" on ebay.

I bought one from him. He does excellent work and always has several for sale on ebay. If you are patient you can usually get one for around $100 (US) with shipping, making these cameras a very reasonable way to get a TLR.

On my last trip to Portugal I used my Flexaret V along with my Rolleiflex Automat, keeping film in both of them so that I would not have to stop and reload. To my eye the images from the Flexaret were just as good at the ones from the Rolleiflex.

Just looked at cupog and he has a number of models right now....a VI, a Standard, a VII, a V, and an IV. Any one these that should be avoided or one that is more reliable than others?

Thanks!

You got a good deal on a nice camera. If you sell it, you loose all bragging rights. And what happens if one or both of your other TLRs goes south on you? Never hurts to have back-up.

Keep it, Mike. It's also looks great with the grey coverings.

All should be decent. I bought a VII and sent it to Mark Hansen for a CLA... he remarked that the lens was glued to the lensboard, so couldn't be removed! Not sure if that is a quirk of mine or not though.

I have not had a IV, but I have a IIa, a beatup III, and 3 model V in addition...

The V's with the Prontor shutter seem better than those with the Metax shutter. The metax doens't seem as well made.

Note that the film transport mechanism on the V can be prone to failure (if not lubed properly)... having said that, a camera from cupog will be well sorted. Anything from the IV up will be a good user camera.

In all, I love Flexarets. I also love my other TLR's... bad case of gas that recurs every few months!

Thanks sharpey, obviously it is important to get a version that will work well as any service after the sale (at cupog's prices - shipping is $41.00 alone) would put too much value into the camera. Any other comments on these interesting cameras would be welcome.

Thanks

Raymond
