I am very, very impressed ... still dont know which focal lenght best fits to my eye,
but when I take my fathers Mamiya SLR three years ago I found 50mm f:2
standrard lens on it. When I tried to take some shots for a first time I realised that I need more space, 50mm is fantastic but it is not wide enuff for me ...
than I bought some old 28mm Mamiya lenses and I am very happy with it ... but
again there was one thing: sometimes I need blured back ground - and 28mm is very sharp ... I think that 35mm f.lenght is magic line: it is wider than 50mm and in the same time you can have fantastic bokeh
till Santa come to my place, I will
be happy with Minolta Rokkor 40mm
. One more thing: Zeiss company said that
their 35mm f:2 have Zero distortion
.

Hmmm. I have no doubt its a great lens but the review may just be a tad biased since it's the Carl Zeiss newsletter.

The ZM 35/2 is a fantastic performer for me. I sold off my L 35 because this ZM lens was more pleasing in its rendering.
As an aside, this reminds me of a remark that a fellow from the Leica-User Forum made to me. When I was asking him in a PM about the VF of his MP, he answered my question, but at the bottom of his answer wrote in FULL LOUD CAPS, "PS, WHY DO YOU PUT JAPANESE LENSES ON YOUR LEICA BODIES? LEICA IS ALL ABOUT THE GLASS!"
I asked him whether he had tried out the ZM 25,35 or 50/2? He told me, "of course not!" /////Well perhaps you shouldn't pass judgment on them without giving them a shake?
No further response....
I thought to myself, "blind allegiance to a brand name." Well you can stay blind, but I am enjoying what I see when I use my ZM lenses.....even on my Leica Ms, heaven forbid!
And FWIW, i love my M bodies and my summilux 50; but because they are great performers; not because of the brand or where they were made. I think the same about my Zeiss stuff....
sorry for the tangent.

I own one and indeed it is superb, but would ignore that review. The chap says Master Class...far too often for this to be anything other than a paid (or in kind) endorsement. I actually dont disagree with him (not that I have used all the other 35mm RF lenses available) in his praise, but thats all that can be seen in this review; it is a very good lens, but we already knew that!

I don't doubt the quality of the Zeiss lenses eventhough the report probably won't change the minds of the Leicaphiles. These are great lenses with beautiful rendition. I saw your new blog and hope your daughters surgery went well. I hope that you don't have to sell your ZI to pay for it. That would be a shame. Maybe you can set up a payment plan for her. I also love the new avator of you blowing the shofar (rams horn) for those that don't know. Have a good day my friend.

I appreciate good glass regardless of the name, but invariably when I try Zeiss lenses, I tend to like them more than other brands, on average. It probably has to do with the threedimensionality and the way the in and out of focus passage looks through their lenses. A uniform colour rendition and superb sharpness are just the final icing on the cake.
Take a look at the 35 Biogon shot I've just uploaded now - this is close range rendition that makes your head spin:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1240549537&size=l
and this one is how it looks like at infinity:
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=1217248456&size=l
Consider these are handheld shots taken on XP2, I wonder how they'd turn up on a good 100 ISO silver film...

Beautiful landscape in the second shot. love how the sharpness of the clouds is maintained in the distance as well as closeup. The lens wasn't wide open on the shoes was it?, because the people in the background are not as blurred as most lenses are wide open. I love the shot though, not complaning. It's a fantastic lens.

As far as I remember, both shots have been made at f4.0 - I have noticed that going beyond f 4.0 does not add anything to sharpness, and also, that short shutter speed helps make the images more detailed and lets the definition of the lens show better.

Wonderful news, and will keep her in my prayers. I just noticed you have the cv 40/1.4 for your Icon. How do you like it? And are you thinking about going wider?
This is the lens he's "moved away" from:

I love my Minolta Rokkor-M 28/2.8. It's small, has a really smooth focus throw, and a built-in focus knob. Even if your copy has the dreaded "spots," odds are it will still preform really nicely.
I've got a few samples taken from it here:

It's a great lens, I got really lucky and picked mine up for $285.

28/2.8 Konica M-Hexanon, 28/2.8 Zeiss M. Both excellent and comparatively inexpensive used.kshapero said:Love to hear opinions on which 28mm to get.
