CV 35mm 2.5 flare?

I've read around the place that the CV 35mm color skopar is very flare resistant (i know, anecdotal and unverified) but I've been getting some very bad flare in admittedly extremely flare inducing situations. See below (frames 16-19)

The bright afternoon sun was quite low and I was basically shooting into it, though it was out of frame. I didn't have a hood except that small ring that comes with the lens (classic version). Basically, everything is as bad as it could be.

Is this level of flare to be expected or could there perhaps be something wrong with my lens.

With many lenses, having a bright light source just outside of the frame, is often worse than including the light inside the frame.

When you've got really bright sun in the frame like this, it's not unexpected. The modern Cosina lenses have very good coatings, but in this situation there's not much that can be done. A quick inspection looking thru the lens at a bright light source like a halogen lamp will quickly show if there is any haze that might be a contributing factor. Also, if you were shooting at a wider aperture to maintain a high shutter speed (freeze motion of the cyclists) that might increase the overall flare effect. I would suspect in this situation, you've also got light bouncing back off of the pressure plate in the camera, which will just make the problem worse. My Cosina lenses all seem to have pretty good contrast, compared to older Leica lenses, so unless you have a problem with low contrast or flare in normal situations, I wouldn't be concerned.

I owned three versions of this lens. Never had flare problems with second version of LTM without hood, used first LTM version with hood and also no flare. But M version was flaring without hood.

I have shot with my CV 35/2.5 for two years now in the bright Aussie sun. With the CV brand hood. Never had an issue with flare as in your pics, but then I am not in the habit of pointing it at such bright light sources. My view as a user is that the lens is fine with handling flare but it can not be expected to not render such powerful light when the angles work against it.

No filter. The hood I'm using is the mini hood that comes with it not the accessory hood.

Yeah, it's probably that I'm asking too much of it. I just wanted to see if it indicated something I should look into.

I have the 25/4 LTM and for sure I got flare like yours with the sun just out of view, using the little standard hood and also a filter. I have the 35/2.5 too but haven't stressed it like I have with the 25/4.

This is re-assuring. Adelaide sun is bright, bright, bright - I'm using one myself on my M2, hope I like this lens. I think I will by the comments and reputation on this forum.
