My PII has started to exhibit this defect, where the center core ( encompassing all the glass elements ) has started to become loose. It has about a 1/16" play in every direction and seems to be disconnected from the barrel/focuse ring. Is this an easy repair job for me to do? Or do I need to send it out to a qualified lens repair person?

In this picture here, the loose core I'm referring to is the black tube that you see, it is separating from the rest of the lens..

If I grasp onto the aperature ring tabs and shake slightly, the whole core + aperature ring will move around as a separate unit from the rest of the lens..

ywenz, if you shine a light into the back of your lens, between the mounting flange and the rear lens element, you should see a retaining ring in there somewhere. It will be round with two notches in it, 180 degrees apart. If you have a spanner, you simply put the tips into those notches and tighten like you would any other screw.

Follow the Micro Tools link I put in the other thread, they make a nice one with interchangeable tips.

Kevin thanks for the hint. I do see the ring with two tiny notches 180 degs apart. My question now is how would I know the baseline position of the center core? Right now, since the core moves freely with gravity along the lateral axis of the lens - should I tighten the ring whilst holding the lens upright? or upside down?

yikes, it seems that if you dont do this right it will decenter the lens, I guess you dont have the option of returning this on warranty?
