Recently I purchased one of the original Canonets off ebay. It's the type with the film advance lever on the bottom:

One issue it does have is that the viewfinder is very dark. It's like looking through sunglasses and makes composing shots in low light difficult. You can see the difference between the over exposed kitchen in this shot and the slightly under exposed view of it through the viewfinder:

The viewfinder is also distinctly green. The rangefinder spot and framelines are a golden colour:

MY QUESTION: Is this the way the viewfinder is supposed to be? Or is this a common problem that can be fixed with a good clean?

I've taken the top plate off and given all of the parts of the viewfinder a bit of a rub with some coton buds. This made no difference. I've read some people suggesting the use of nail polish remover, but I'm a little worried that might do some damage.

I'm a fan of the camera and have got some great shots out of it. If it's a problem that can't be fixed I'll grab another copy of the same body, or perhaps a QL17. But if this is how the viewfinder is designed I might switch to a dearer RF.
