Has any one else had this problem. Now that cold weather has arrived, those darn plastic lens caps won't snug up to those cold metal lenses. I have two of them that likes to fall off only in cold weather. Any recommendations for a quick fix besides duct tape & super glue?😱

Let's face it - plastic is just cheaper to produce. Even Leica lenses come with plastic end caps now.

I remember a place in eastern Pasadena, CA where there was a metal Leica lens cap that somehow got pushed into the sidewalk when the cement was still wet. Speaking of landmarks ---!! And that was right on Colorado Bl.

I generally have pretty good luck with my Minolta lenses with the type of caps that have the two little "ears" you push in to put them on the lens. Seems to hold them pretty well.

That's because your cameras have metal shutters, Joe.

Would never leave home without.

didn't use them on the cl or m3 either.
in fact, in the past i sold off the lens caps instead of storing them.
i have kept the zeiss caps and the hex just has a generic cap.

I prefer using plastic lids from things like Pringles cans or old medicine bottles , etc for lens caps. The are bendable, easy to replace, and will fit over a lens/filter very securely.

I also sometimes use a craft material, polymer-clay, brands such as Fimo or Sculpey for hard to fit lenses. Mold it, bake it in a low temp. oven and seal it polyurethane if there is any plastic to 'clay' contact (to prevent leaching).

Cheers

I've missed too many shots because of caps. Use them only for transporting in the bag or the pocket, and only slip-on caps (Heliar 15mm, Color Skopar 21mm and 28mm). With other lenses, I have a hood - or nothing. Even when used with the M6 - the chance to burn the cloth shutter is close to zero. First I rarely use f8 or higher, second I don't put it somewhere with the lens directed to the sun, and third when I walk toward the bright sun I keep the lens down. Worked well so far.

I noticed most pro photogs don't use caps outside the camera bags, too, and are not worried to clean a $3k lens with their shirt. But I wouldn't try that with a 1950's Leitz lens...

I too use caps from pringles or yogart or what ever I can find that fits. I've even purchased lids from tupperware for them! The tupperware lids have never fallen off in over 30 yrs of use. Have lost a yogart cap or two, but the price was right.

You might try using some hockey tape (cloth backing) on this inside of a larger plastic lit to keep it snug in very cold weather.

Virtually all modern lenscaps are spring loaded into the filter threads. They work like a charm and cost next to nothing, as well as offering a place for a "Mr. Yuk" sticker on your camera. Filters also protect your lens at virtually no monetary cost and zero measureable image quality loss.

If you fit a hood and use Bryces snap in caps then you wont get finger prints and you will be shaded. You might need a lanyard on the cap to remind you to remove it before shooting...

The hood will save the filter thread in a drop situation up to a point...
