Hi

I just got an industar-50. very clean, nice looking, can't wait to see the results...

Meanwhile just out of curiosity:

The Serial number starts with 80. does this mean that it was produced in 1980??

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I'm not exactly sure about dating Industar lenses. Jupiters are easy; the first two digits are the year of manufacture, but I don't think that applies to Industars. Is your lens the rigid or the collapsible version?
 
Nice sharp lens, but I don't think they were made anywhere near that late. I don't think the first two digits rule always holds with russian lenses.

My wife hardly lets me date old russian lenses
No chance I'll upgrade to women... :D :D

One Russian/Soviet optical factories. LZOS = ЛЗОС, Лыткаринский завод оптического стекла = Optical glass factory in Lytkarino, near Moscow. Still working though.

Can you educate us as to how Industar serial numbers work? I've been confused by this issue before. Does the "first two digits=year of manufacture" rule apply to all Industars? Are the Fed Industars (I26, I61, I61LD) numbered differently from the Zorki Industars (I22, I50)?

You really shouldn't date an Industar, at least not a good looking one. She'll be off with the first Bessa that comes along.

My best I-22 ran off with a Leica, Bessa's aren't the only threat!

FED may have numbered in sequence but I'm not convinced they used the first two digits as a year of manufacture. I have just obtained a FED 2, bought in Moscow in 1961, according to the seller. The lens appears to be the original and has a serial number starting "67"

They definitely didn't. I have here a FED-5 with a serial number starting with 21 that was definitely not made in 1921, given that FED-5 production only started in 1978.

With lenses it's a bit confusing. I have two I-26s, starting with 26 and 47 respectively, so with those it's out of the question. Then I have two I-61s, a "panda" with 68 and a black one with 83, where it could well be the year of manufacture. Maybe they changed their numbering system for lenses at some point.

When I wrote: Industars made by FED for FEDs are numbered in through order. I was quite clear - NO `two-digits` rule existed for long period. Approximately since 1934 till middle 80s.


Still I-61s were made:
- early Industar 61 w/o index - FED factory, panda finish, no `two-digits` rule
(Note: I-61 w/o index also has lanthanum glass)

- late Industar 61 L/D (lanthanum glass, rangefinder version) - FED factory, black/panda finish, `two-digits` rule (made in late 80s)

- Industar-61 L/D (lanthanum glass, rangefinder)- LZOS production, black finish, `two digits rule`
- Industar-61 L/Z (Lantanum glass, SLR version) - same.

So check factory, check lens version and then go to serial.
