the first 3 shots were all at f2...

much better than day 1...the camera is starting to feel more comfortable in my hand...i reset it a bit...the battery did not die...

i need to get used to the metering system...spot since the start but i'm blowing too many exposures...

and missing the action too many times...the camera and i are not in sync...

one woman who told me knows cameras...asked if the x100 was an old camera and was very surprised to discover it was a digital...i guess the retro styling really works, for some.

this is from yesterday...

overall, things are improving but not very much so far. i keep hitting the buttons and changing the settings. for awhile it was storing 5 or 6 images and stopping my shooting completely...and then there were 3 small brackets, squares in the optical finder all at once...not sure what happened there but i shut a few things and they went away.

i feel very clumsy around this little thing.

Those 3 boxes are the AF correction. Its for when your close to the subject, the green focus box will move around and show where the cameras focusing.
What card are you using. You almost need the new 45MBPS cards.
It's does write faster. The camera will release even if the record light is blinking.. you just can't change settings.

Try using the smallest AF box, it focuses accurate and faster.
Most important, take your time and find your comfort zone.
It's not that different than the RD's once you get it going...it just doesn't have that great lever advance.
Raw writes faster then Jpeg... I'll get objections here...
It does tho'....

After you get comfortable with AF, try MF and see how the camera operates. It's a deadly street camera... Just watch the DOF scale...
Different thread...
Good luck Joe, it's good you have the camera...

not sure what the 3 boxes were, actually 2 boxes plus a set of brackets...
i'm using the san disk pro, 45mbps...this was a setting that saved 6 different shots of the same thing, milliseconds apart...
i am using the smallest af box...it's not the slowness that bothers me it's the timing of when the shutter trips...time should take care of that.
i don't want to manual focus with the x100...i have the rd1 for that...i want auto everything for the lazy man in me.

Did you try Auto ISO? It's very good. I've never trusted any camera with this feature but this camera, that's the ticket for me.

So are you using AA...Auto mode?

Yessir.... That's a sweet way to work. I do that all the time and switch between MF & AF depending on the shoot.
I finally stopped missing my RD's... It took years...

Joe it sounds like you haven't rocked the command wheel, item 1 of the firmware upgrade - which translated means locked. Once you've got the settings for the session lock the command wheel options by pressing OK for 3 seconds. Before this upgrade I was finding myself in burst mode like you and it was very disconcerting. Worse than that I took what I thought would be a candid but the flash was switched on. It was a great snot.

thanks...didn't know about that one!

The three focus boxes are explained on p. 87 of the new manual. The boxes are turned on or off using the CORRECTED AF FRAME menu selection.

"If ON is selected, a second focus frame for focus distances of about 80 cm (2.6 ft) will be added to the display in the optical view- finder. The focus frame for the current focus distance is displayed in green when the shutter button is pressed halfway."

The purpose is to let you know when parallax will effect the focus point in OVF mode. The third box will be in between the standard box and the bracketed box and is the focus point.

The San-Disk 8 GB PRO cards speed things up.

You can't argue with the results. The photos look damn good to me.

well, i hope to get to the point where i can take a 'good' image with the x100...as for these that are posted...they are sharp and clear, for sure.

i downloaded a trial copy of lightroom but the learning is slow going...i can't even figure out how to save a file!!
it's not very intuitive, for me anyway.
i need to find a good tutorial.

I hear you Joe; I could not puzzle out Lightroom on my own, so I got this great resource, and followed the lessons with the example files and learned more about it than I thought would be there!

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Classroom in a Book
Mac/Win, English
product# 65064200
$55 from the Adobe Store.

The deal with LR (Aperture as well) is that there is no concept of "saving." The original images are stored in the place you specify, but any editing you do, regardless of RAW or Jpeg are applied "on top of the original image" so you are not actually changing the pixels of the original images. So the changes are instant and reversible, and because of this nature, you don't have to actually save the progress you made. Next time you open the application, all photos will show up where you left off last time.

the 'new' manual?

Yes, the manual has been updated following firmware 1.10. It's the only one I can find now on the fujifilm.com/support site. The command dial lock (p4) also locks the RAW button, a bit of a pity. The new parallax corrected AF focus frame is p87.

I can highly recommend the Luminous-Landscape video tutorial.

It's a bit jokey and "hail-fellow-well-met" between Reichmann and Schewe, but it really does tell you absolutely everything you need to know about LR, and is much better than a book IMO, and for less money.

There's a lot about the "why" of things rather than just the "how".

They have a 15% off sale at the moment - 9 hours of high-rez video tutorials for $43.

"When framing pictures in the electronic viewfinder or LCD monitor, you can choose the size of the focus frame for AF-S by pressing the AF button and pressing the command control left or right. Press the control left to reduce the frame by up to 50%, right to enlarge it by up to 150%. The setting takes effect when you release the AF button."

......from p50 of the manual.

In Lightroom the equivalent of "saving" is export, this allows you to control size etc of the "saved" file. As already mentioned this process doesn't change the original.
