De Young Museum Opening

Today, I braved the traffic and crowds to see the re-opened De Young in San Francisco, and definitely felt like a fish swimming upstream. First off, let me say that it looks better in person than it did in the pictures that I have seen of it.

I only saw one other person using a rangefinder camera. Unfortunately, I was too far to see what kind it was. But the lens on it looked like it could have been a CV lens. The only other film cameras I saw were a nice looking Konica Autoreflex T and a Nikkormat.

Everyone else I saw not using a digital P&S were using DSLR's, and I was reminded of why I love rangefinder cameras 😀 😀 😀 There is something about the sight of someone weighted down like a pack animal with multiple zooms, industrial sized flashes, hoods, filters, tripods and whatever else DSLR users carry that make me appreciate the simplicty of rangerfinders all that much more.

I even saw some people who gave their kids, patient wives etc. etc. the job of following them around with their excess gear 🙄

I took along my Minolta Hi-Matic 9, Retina IIIS, and a couple of extra lenses for the Retina and my old Sekonic l-28c stuffed into my vest. I barely felt like I was carrying anything 🙂

My only regrets were not having a superwide for exterior shots and leaving the Retina's 135 at home, because I wanted to try out my recently acquired tele arton 85/4.

I think it looks better in person than I thought it would, when I first heard the architects explaining the concept of their design. One thing that nothing I read mentioned, but was truly impressed by, is that the copper cladding on the roof makes a random pattern on the floor that does make it feel like you are walking underneath a canopy of trees.

Years ago I lived at Irving and 25th..would walk around in the park every day, sit for an hour or so twice a week in a small bamboo forest. The DeYoung complex had a half dozen photographers with separate labs hidden away from each other...each hardly knew the other existed.
