I got a very nice Canon FD 200mm 2.8 lens.
There was something down inside.
I sent the lens to Jim at Vermont Camera Works for a cleaning.
He said there was a dead bug in it.
How the heck does a bug get inside a lens???

Could be a bug in the assembly procedure.

Many lenses have an open lens design. Not that hard to 'catch' something inside.
I have a Chinon Memotron CE-II with a dead bug in the viewfinder. I can make out its little legs. Recently I had an SLR come from a flea market with a similar one inits viewfinder, but this time it was alive. Trust me, that's a lot more annoying
Do I understand correctly that in order to get rid of the bug, you had your firmware updated?

Bought a Minolta lens (good shape) with an attached body XD-11 (no promises).
There was a dead bug in the viewfinder. Happens.

It's called a flea market for a reason.

Same happened with a Zuiko 55mm my dad gave to me. Had spider-like bug inside.
Seems they get inside the lens through the diaphragm pin/lever groove.
Just removed the back lens element and got it out real quickly. Nice lens that I still get some use.
Regards.

You wasted your money paying to have that bug removed. My spider would have done it for free!
