On December 5, 1933, Prohibition of alcohol was overturned in the U.S. (Alcohol was prohibited for human consumption in the 18th Amendment, ratified in 1919, but not taking effect until 1920. The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th.)

Today is Repeal (of Prohibition) Day!

Here's a link if you're interested: http://www.repealday.org/

I know for many of our members, especially the EU and Australian crowd, Prohibition sounds horrible.

Well, it WAS horrible.

It was one of those "first steps down the path to theocracy," that can lead to very bad places. Indeed, a dark period in our history.

Thankfully, we came to our senses, actually learning from our mistakes (are you paying attention, Mr. Bush?) You can't legislate morality, at least in a free society. Dictatorships have had some success in that regard. But the irony is that alcohol consumption may have actually increased during Prohibition.

To honor the occasion, please post photos of "beer and gear." (That's not original, I saw the term in the "Coffee and Cameras" thread.) Other imbibements welcome. And please join us, RFF brothers and sisters across the seas.

fuzzy cocktail, no gear

Here's one of the first shots with my relatively new Canon 50mm f/0.95, wide open on Walgreen's (Agfa) 200 ASA C-41 ($2 per 24 exposure roll).

Looks a little tipsy, huh?

Sorry, no gear on display, unless you count the shaker and cordless phone (Uniden).

Hate to break it to you Crawdiddy, we still have prohibition in several forms. That is why drugs and crime still go together, and why you can't legally distill your own hooch- more important than it may seem because storebought liquor is swill and drug traffic related crime hurts us all.
Anyhow, the day does deserve recognition as a baby step less far backward...
I don't seem to have an appropriate image on file at the moment for the occasion... bummer.

Good point, Bryce. I know in certain parts of the country (Appalachia for example) home brewing for profit never fell OUT of favor after Prohibition ended.

Well it is finally the cocktail hour here so I shall toast this repeal of prohibition and return momentarily with a pic.

Best I can do for now--film shots take a while--from my VGA res. camera phone. Much later into the celebration, and things won't be so steady!:D

Yes it is tasty. A little echanacea tincture when you're feeling a little under the weather and it turns into medicine ;)

Time for another!
