Hi all,
I dis something stupid (though, in my defekte, i did NOT know it was stupid at the time) I shot a 2 rolls of hp5 on a vacation 6 months ago. One rated at 400 and one I am almost sure that I rated at 800. My problem now is that the marker I used to indicate which was likely rated higher apparently did not stick to the film case
Now, while I have been postponing devolving these two films, I might as well get around to it; but first I would like to know what you would do in my situation, or alternatively how you think I would get the best result when i develop the two films? Should I develop both as iso 400 or 800? I am thinking the best way would probably be to develop one at the time, and see if that has been developed correctly, and then develop the other depending on the results of that.

Probably not a big deal since it's just one stop. Maybe pick a developer that's not too contrasty and just split the difference between the dev times. E.g. with Ilford DD-X the difference for Hp5 at 400 and 800 is just 1 minute so I'd just do 30sec longer than the standard dev time for 400.
As for your idea of developing one first and then the other, I don't think that's going to work. You'll be hard pressed to tell the difference as I suspect either film will look just fine at either dev times.

Yes, develop 1 at a time. After seeing subjects of the first shots developed, you'll probably recall enough to know when you had made note of shooting at higher ISO, so, you will know if that first roll was developed ideally, and can also, then, do the 2nd roll ideally. I'd probably overdevelop the first roll just a bit.

I'd let it depend on the rest of your workflow. Is it easier for you to deal with a bit more or a bit less density/contrast than you normally get?

I would develop the 2 rolls normally. As mentioned, it's only 1 stop, and w/ B&W film 1 stop is no big deal. I wouldn't use Rodinal, but something like D76 should be fine.
