Assuming the seller is right and the lens was clear, this may turn out to be the Nikon deal of the year.

Indeed, if the "white something" were only reflections then it lloks like a great deal !!

Is this generation of the 50/1.4 thought to be particularly desirable? Certainly with the hood and case and unmarked looks it is possibly in collector condition but other than that?
Generally non-Ai lenses go for less than Ai and Ai go for less than AiS on eBay but that might be ignorance more than anything else.

They seem to sell for $200. Even if the lens had mushrooms growing in it, the hood alone was worth $36.

I bought a 50/1.4 ai in nearly mint condition for $50 a couple of months ago, then picked up the hood for another $14, locally, so I guess I did OK.
The secret, I think, is to look for things people don't bid on because the info is inadequate--in this auction the hood obscures what's under it. My lens had only one blurry photo, of the underside of the barrel, and said nothing about focal length or speed--I just happened to recognize the 50/1.4 proportions, and trusted that the filter it had on it meant the person who owned it cared enough to take care of it. I recently picked up a clean 55mm micro for the same price, and similar situation, and an insufficiently-described N90 for around $25. No other bidders on any of these.

I saw that, but lack of budget space kept me out of the mix. And I've already got one, except for the case.

I sold my 50mm/1.4 SC for the older 5.8cm/1.4. I'm still not sure I like the 5.8cm more than the lens it replaced however. That is a good deal on a 50/1.4 that looks to be in nice shape, and those hoods are hard to come by. I sold my beat to hell 50/1.4 for $90 but it had nice pictures and a good description.

Good Price but not the deal of the year.
There are hundreds of thousands of these out there...
