Did I get screwed by the repair shop?

A month back I bought a v4 35 summicron off eBay and it arrived with the retaining/filter ring or whatever way out of alignment so the lens hood sat completely crooked. I took it to a reputable shop in town and was told the lens needed to be completely disassembled to fix this and they'd CLA it while they were at it.

I got it back yesterday and maybe I'm being OCD at this point, but isn't it still misaligned? Also, I just read that the retaining/filter ring being out of alignment is actually just a glue problem which should've been a $25 fix? I paid $190 (the seller reimbursed me.)

I received 2 hoods with the lens. The first is the 12524 and the second is the 12526.

Looks totally straight to me.
How are your first negatives with the lens? Anything wrong with them?

Oh and when you're using the hood, ditch the filter. Only fives you ghost reflections with bright objects like lights etc.

I have one, not sure the version but it was made in Canada, that has the off-center issue with the lens hood. It also has a loose gizmo - don't know the proper name - for focusing. I've had it for about 35 years and will send it off to be set right, but neither issue affects the images. Just annoying for the hood and somewhat worried that the focusing gizmo will fall off.

I was about to say ‘just use a round hood’ but that humor might not be appreciated so...

From the photos you show I can’t see any misalignment. That said, I didn’t shell out the money either so I see why you might be a little picky about the quality of the repairs.

Nice photos. Almost clean lexus, not as usual countertop and big tin of bull.
28mm phone camera distortions.

Now, if you want to check it use the tool. Find flat machined surface. The regular desk will do. Get right angle ruler from dollar store or Walmart.

Put camera on this flat surface just like on the tiles picture. Put ruler's one side on the same flat surface. Another side should be vertical, slide it to the hood, check if vertical side of the ruler and hood side are in parallel.

Yes, it's a little bit off. Not surprising that no one else sees it, but I have a good eye for this sort of thing. Totally acceptable though. I agree with zuiko85 that if it bothers you get a round hood, like 99% of cameras have anyway. The lens is round, yes?

#12504 .....it's THE shade
also the 'square' shade is a piece of moulded plastic....so is it reasonable to expect perfect tolerances?

Mine was not perfect either. Bugged the 5hit out of me, but no issues on the image.

Added it to the list of things that did seem important enough to fix though it made me think every time I mounted it on either of M bodies.

That raggedy piece of black gaffers tape is more annoying--to me. Get one of those round adhesive dots--for aesthetics.

Or you could use the top of the hood to get that famous Garry Winogrand tilt--it's what he did--just use it as your horizon line--or you could buy Garry Winogrand shoes--one heel is thicker than the other--like his name has an extrra r.

whatever questions you have about a repair should be addressed to the repair shop.

guesses by people who did not examine the lens before and after the repair
is a waste of time

I think I have an idea for a special bubble level with the centered markers off center and call it's the Winogrrad Street Shooter Level (WSSL). Sounds like a fun KickStarter Project. I'll make one that tilts left, one right and the next version that will be selectable, either or!

I'll make one that has no bubble for the white house press corp! I better stop here as I'm going to get a slap by a mod.......

Never had a square hood that sat perfect. Maybe your expectations are high?

I would say its fair tolerance for a sun shade...

For the White House version--use Russian vodka instead of water :)

Or use Champagne--that has bubbles

Does it take sharp pictures? I once has a Summicron Aspherical that was a bit off, but it took great pictures.

I just got it back yesterday so I don't know but I don't see how this could affect the image quality in any way? Honestly I'm just annoyed because I waited a month and paid $190 and, call me crazy, but for that amount of time and money I feel like everything should be aligned.

Should've trusted my gut and just sent it to DAG. Would've been way cheaper and done properly (and faster) but with the way my luck has been the past few months I had a feeling a USPS employee would just throw the package against a wall or something. Oh well. What's 2 more weeks of not shooting after 3 1/2 months (first lens looked to have been knifed across the glass by DHL and it took a month to get reimbursed. This lens arrived with the ring completely out alignment, and now this) of dealing with this ****.
