Just home from work and I got an email from Flikr reminding me about "World Photowalk Day"...which does sound like a good time but I'll bet big money my small town isn't one of the cities with "official" events going on.
But, no matter.
What I was amazed by was the photo at the bottom of the email showing a happy photographer chimping with/at his camera...a FED 5.
(I was going to post this int the FSU section, but decided that the rest of the
rangefinder world deserved to see it, too!)
My amazement was mostly that someone working at a business about photography thought this was a good preview (I guess?)of what might be happening along the walk...

It looks as though the guy is looking for a viewing screen, and becoming bemused as he realizes it never had one.

If it had been a Fed I it could have been one of those that was hacked into a digital point and shoot (can't find the link).

But it isn't and unless he is admiring the indestructible Soviet covering on the camera it all rather sad.

These something weeks and something days always make me wonder if we are living in Stalin's Russia...

Everyone will parade at .............. with their camera and a spare film and photograph the glorious achievements of capitalist wotsitland.

Know what I mean?

That had not occurred to me before reading your post, David.

But now I'm feeling like I better be making a Five Year Plan for Continued Photographic Glory...

And, looking at that photo again, I'm also wondering how well those headphones work with that hat.

He's probably just trying to keep it away from his nose so he doesn't have to whiff the lingering odor of horrible-smelling Soviet leather. It took months for my Fed to air out enough that I could stand to bring it to my face.

I'm making a positive effort to not be such a snarky/crotchety old man lately and have decided that I was wrong in my initial thoughts about what is going on in this photo.

So, what I now think the photographer is doing is not chimping, but is, in fact, that he is looking at one of the exposure charts--from the inside of the box of film he's using--that he has taped to the back of his camera so he can confidently use the FED and not need to rely on the meter.

:D
