Brian,

Do you have any info (or could you point me towards any that you know of) about disassembly of a pre-war collapsible 5cm Sonnar for Contax? I've looked over Mike Elke's page on the post-war version, but it doesn't seem to have any lessons for how to start on the pre-war lens.

This is one that I paid $5 for at a swap meet, and although it has significant cleaning marks, I suspect it will be a good user on my Contax II. I think it was coated after the fact since it doesn't have a red "T" on it.

Douglas, I have taken these apart before and have a spare.

This will be a good thread for the new forum. I should be able to photograph the process of disassembling it this weekend. I will start a thread and post some pictures.
 
Okay! I got a 30-minute reprieve from Mowing the Lawn.

I photographed the entire sequence with my Trusty Nikon E3. I need to resize and upload the procedure, and will post a thread on the disassembly and -re-assembly this weekend. Because the storm blew over, and I'm headed to the lawn mower right now.

Thank you Brian! As I started this, I realized that most of my 30-year old Starrett set of jeweler's screwdrivers needed sharpening before I applied them to the lens, so I will delay any more work until I have my tools in order. I will have to make a jig to sharpen both sides parallel or just buy a new set of blades if I can find them. Do you have any suggestions for other high quality sets of jeweler's screwdrivers and where to buy them? Also other specialty tools for working on cameras and lenses? I found Micro-Tools.com, but wondered if there were other similar sites. Perhaps a sticky on this forum about tools would help the prospective lens-butcher 🙂
 
Walmart sells a "Stanley" set that's not as bad as I thought, however it does need sharpening. Most of the flat blades are too thick out of the box. OK for the $5 price (or thereabouts).
 
I will start a "Sticky" thread on the tools that I use. Nothing is very complicated, just the reverse. I make some of the "gripper thingies" out of hollow rubber corks and such. Some pliers made for split retaining rings, files down. But mostly: good jeweler screwdrivers, fine-tipped needle-nosed pliers, a $25 spanner like those on Ebay, and a hand-drill with Triple-Zero and Double-Zero drill bits.
