Diy Hood For Elmar

Right now, prices on the bay for the FISON shade that fits the
Elmar lens are ranging from $75 on up to $250 .

If you have an unused Leica filter for the lens, here's a cut rate solution:

The glass filter element was removed (unscrew the retaining ring from the back) and clean the metal exterior.

The 7/16" X 1 1/2" plastic tube tube was glued to the step of the filter mount with Locktite brand adhesive sealant, and then wrapped with black photo tape. Inside was sprayed (can) flat black.

I actually tried pharmacy (pill) bottles, ended up with the inner tube from a talc stick pre-shave (poudre pre-rasage) made in Switzerland for Remington electric shavers.

Here is my version.

Inner part is brass tube from hardware store. Same as some folks here are using to remove lens-shutter block on Moskva folders.
Paited black.
I glued-in the cloth stripes from used film cassettes make it to sit it tight on the lens.
The outer tube is from listerine mouthwash bottle cap. With electrical tape in between, to keep it together.

There are dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of unbranded and branded 36mm hoods out there. I'd just search for one on ebay, FWIW.

Cost me USD 35. It was spray-painted to 'b*tt-ugly' condition. Cleaned it up, rubbed the chrome with brass polisher until it got less riddled with rub marks, painted the inside flat black again.

Nice detail: this is a pretty rare hood that presumably initially was made for the 35mm lens only. The design is identical to the design for early 35mm hoods and the '50mm' engraving is in a different font altogether.

Good deals can be had for those who are patient. I've been wanting a hood that would sort of match my nickel Elmar for over a year, and now found it.

Agree with this. With enough patience you can find an original hood. I ended up with a VALOO for $65. Downside - it took a couple of years. eBay saved searches are your friend when bargain hunting.

For me the search engine returns about dozen or two "no name" slip on hoods, which are too wide and useless in terms how they damage the lens front after some time of usage.
I don't want to scratch my lens front with bare metal "no name" hood.

Yep, once I have this amount of cash to burn I'll get original one also.
For now, my lens needs the hood ASAP, so I went quick,dirty and cheapest way possible for the working one.

True, granted. Yet, I bought several items more from the same chap and the shipping charges were combined so shipping was less on the hood. Not sure how much though.

There was a thread here the other day from a fellow member who inquired about the depth of a FISON hood, since he'd run into a piece of brass pipe with the correct diameter to solder onto an empty filter rim. Sounded like a thorough approach to create a custom-made hood😎

I opted this out. I don't have empty filter rim. Just ordered Leitz clam on yellow filter yesterday. The Leitz hood is the next, but it will take some time, so, using my cheap DIY for couple of months or so.
