Do DSLRs dream of electric sheep?

I was given a Digital Rebel, the first iteration, by our daughter. I have had loads of fun with it, and since it came with two lenses and has enough pixels for my use, I'm not in a lather to get another, newer model. What I want to know is, aside from wearing out the shutter, or dropping the camera in a lake, do these cameras ever get "pixel rot" (whatever that is) and/or become suddenly inoperable? Or, can I expect to get maybe years of use out it? Just like a regular SLR. Or maybe a range-finder camera.

My Canon 20D, which I bought when it was released in 2004, still works fine now, in 2011. It has moderate damage from wear, tear, and accidents, but the image quality is the same as when it was new.

I think you'll find digital cameras will get hot pixels (at least this is the case with most Nikons I've owned, with Sony sensors) but time after time, the shutter will fail long before the sensor really becomes unusable.

Yeah, that image will cause a few dreams.

I would ask if electric sheep dream about DSLRs.

May be some day it just die, but for normal use I expect it to last at least a decade, one D50 I had from 2004 still work fines.

I do not know about the dreaming, but they seem to have a useful lifespan of four years at most 🙂
