Zenfolio looks pretty cool, but I'm cheap and will probably stick with free sites like flickr unless someone points me to another primo site.

I have a flickr gallery.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26096406@N00/
My biggest complaint is not being able to format the page display to my own preferences, but considering the (currently) unlimited uploads, it suits me well enough.
WARNING: the first page or so of shots are from a DSLR! Most of the rest are from my rangefinders though ;-) Convenience and cost are my reasons for going to digital, and my money cannot stretch to an M8 or RD-1 - hence a cheap DSLR.

Apparently I have a flickr account, but I don't think it has any pictures in it... (?)
To me the whole site looks awful. There are some good photos, but underneath and beside them it says
This world-class image was found in

Flicker Diamond: The Diamond Class Photographer - Invite needed (Pool)
This Great Photographic Art was made by a Diamond Class Photographer!

Flickr is the only photo hosting site I've accessed, I guess I like it cause it's free and am too cheap to pay for it right now. But after looking at smugmug, zenfolio, and Fotki or Fokti??? I may have to cough up some cash for better presentation and a nicer site.

The best camera is one that still works!
I'm with Colin ... I don't like the look of flickr particularly but I guess a free account is a free account ... however, I decided to part with the dollars and sign up with Zenfolio. I like the way it presents photos and when you pay for something you don't have to put up with all that dross that you get on the main page of the free sites ... they remind me of the junk mail I find in my mailbox!
I often look at some average pic on flickr that has attracted a dozen comments and try to work out why it has done so ... I see much better stuff in our gallery that often goes through without any comment at all?

There's a link to my Flickr in my signature.
Personally I like Flickr. I find the interface fairly clean and attractive, and I much prefer white backgrounds to the black favoured by some gallery sites. Sometime I'll probably upgrade to pro so I can have more sets, but either way I think Flickr is good value.
It's not like you're obliged to browse randomly through pages of terrible photos. I never do, preferring to look at recommended pages or to view the galleries of people who post on the forums I belong to. The single most interesting gallery I've come across belongs to tightsqueez:

As it happens, he's a member here.

I don't know, I've been on flickr for more than a year and I have no experience with the things you have mentioned. I have found a lot of amazing contacts. There are definitely people that post mundane flower shots, put them into "Flower YAYAYA" group or whatever and recieve 300+ comments with all sorts of "awards" and what not, but that kind of bull**** can easily be avoided. There are a lot of little communities on flickr and plenty of talented people who just use it display some of their art. Overall I think the way one can leave and keep track of comments, select favorites, stay updated with photos from contacts, and organize photos is really great on flickr.
