I recently changed my avatar from my old grumpy old man avatar as a number of people mentioned it was off-putting. I'd caught my subject as he was beginning to berate me for taking pictures in "his" restaurant! I selected my new one somewhat randomly, but was wondering what effect an avatar has on the initial perception of the member. Has anyone out there had similar thoughts or experiences as they are enjoying their fruitcakes and holiday cheer? Any thoughts? In any case Happy Holidays to everyone out there.

I dont know but if they look into it too far they might think im a commie, im not, just interested in old chinese propaganda posters...first impressions!

funny you should mention that 🙂.

I just changed my avatar from a pair of Fed cameras to myself.

While I know that it shouldn't make any difference, I do find that I am put off by certain avatars that i've seen out there. I guess it's human nature, eh? 😀

im sure if I had a photo of a beautiful young lady with minimal clothing, and convinced people it was me, they would be more inclined to chat me u-....talk to me. As it happens, as long as your avatar doesnt have a swastika in it, I won't be distracted from my normal 'communication'.

It is an interesting theory. I don't know that I've consciously judged anyone by their avatar, but I suppose one does form opinions...

Definitely something to think about!

Jeff ... probably
Avotius.. too bad; you seemed more exotic
Jon... that was the best bar code ever, I'll miss it
Old Nick... I understand
Warren... on Feds, if you got 'em flaunt 'em
Ash.. go ahead , we promise not to hit on you
popstar.. thinking can be dangerous
William... based on that I hope you look in better shape than that gear
Frank... it works.... most times

I'm a small "c" Canadian........ ;- )

That really interests me and it's something I have often wondered about. I noticed that recentlly 'Ywenz' changed his avatar from a rather belligerent looking character with folded arms ... to Brian the dog out of 'Family Guy.' I had often felt that a lot of people's reactions to his often, somewhat challenging posts, were partly to do with this image?

Perhaps this type of avatar does evoke something within us that causes us to slightly pre-judge the individual posting?

No offence Ywenz! 🙂

Hmmmm.....
My avatar is what it is because I think that an avatar should be some sort of clue about the person using it.We're all composites, and my avatar is just a "link" to a part of what I am...

Regards!
Don

Great question. Yes, I do belive it has some effect. Some people seem convinced that I am my avatar, when really I am a 13-year old schoolgirl pretending to be a flabby middle-aged man. And, yes, I am enjoying the fruitcake 🙂

Exotic still might be in context here though, needless to say my views are a lot different then most people, which is and is not a good thing I guess.

so far, only one colleague told me she reckons my avatar is too agressive.
beside that, i am not aware of any influence on communication, but it may well have an impact.

valder, if u are hiding from the alliance, better not post ur face. the feds are everywhere, especially on the net ... 😛

cheers
