So I dropped my M9 today. I put it in my camera bag and ran and it fell out of my bag about 3ft onto concrete and rolled about 4 feet.
I picked it up and the top plate was loose. You could peek inside and see the innards. Shutter wouldn't fire. But the rear red light came on. And the viewfinder display read Sd. Which means it couldn't detect the SD card. Rear LCD didn't turn on, but it was damaged. All the viewfinder glass was fine. Not scratched. But the body had a deep scar and a dent in it. And you could see the metal inside had cracked where the top plate attached to the body.
I sent it out to Leica NJ via fedex. But missed the last sendout by about 10 minutes. So It'll be shipped tomorrow and arrive Friday.
Anyone have any experience with getting a digital M back from Leica after damage? Is there hope to fix it or will I have to buy a brand new one? Hopefully Leica doesn't charge me a fortune to repair it if that's at all possible. I feel completely useless without it. And like a giant idiot for not making sure it was completely in my bag. In retrospect, for the 20 feet I ran to get out of the way of something, I could have just carried it in my hand.
I just want my Leica back safe and sound and in tip top shape with a brand new top plate and perhaps a new CCD since mine had about a dozen stuck pixels anyway. And preferably less than $1500 for the repair. Which is half my saving and about the most I can afford.
Woe is me. I feel as if I've died inside.

Leica nuts
Leica will fix it like new but it's going to be expensive.
Good luck with the repair. If I was there I would buy you a Scotch.

Doesn't the passport warranty cover everything?

I am sorry to hear about this, and hope the repair is not too dear. If you don't mind, please report back when you know.

Swoop my sister drop her M8 into a lake. Grabbed it out of here, kind of dried it out and sent it to me for a homemade overhaul. It survided with minor injuries...
I wish you recover your gear in running order.

Big time bummer! Nothing feels worse that a favored piece of equipment getting damaged and realizing you can't use it for a while, and getting it back in service is going to cost money you don't want to spend.
Sorry!
Sorry!

It sucks big time. I had to work with the M8 today and it was weird figuring out focal lengths again. And then when I had to edit I had to deal with the magenta cast all over again.
I sent it out to Leica NJ yesterday. Missed the last pickup by 10 minutes. So It'll actually be mailed out today and arrive tomorrow.
I don't have insurance on it. Which is probably stupidity on my part. I was looking at it early this year and for some reason I didn't get it. But I will definitely figure in the expense for the future.
I told my editor what happened and he expressed his sympathy. Apparently the paper has some deal where they can get Canon repairs for free or at least discounted. But alas. I use a Leica.
I still feel hollow inside.

I really feel for you. But worse things happen at sea (i don't even know what that really means). Chin up, keep smiling and just take some awesome shots when you do get it back.

My M8 fell over on a tripod with a 75lux on. The weight tore off the bottom plate and a good segment of the body with it.
It was repaired as good as new by leica but this did not cost me anything as it was fixed via the passport scheme. Even so I did hear from leica that the cost of repair was considerably less than that of replacement. (You might find my thread on this topic with some scary pictures. It was titled "Is this a write off?" and fortunately it was not!)
I really hope you can get it fixed.
Best wishes
Richard

Sorry to hear you dropped your M9. But stop whining, you still have 2 M's left which are capable of extraordinary pictures.
