The first thing that struck me with the genuine hood for the Sigma DP2M is that you can almost get it on with the lens cap fitted which would be very handy IMO because it means you could carry the camera around with the hood mounted but still have protection for the front element from dust etc. You have to remove the hood to remove the cap admittedly but that to me is preferable to having to carry the hood around as a separate item if you want to keep the lens protected.

I picked up a sheet of 1200 wet and dry from the hardware store and using it wet on a flat surface faced the cap down until the hood fiited comfortably with it on ... this involves removing a couple of millimeters of material from the outside of the cap. When the Sigma logo is gone that's about the point where the hood will fit over it and using the 1200 paper wet gives a finish that is as smooth as the rest of the cap.

So ... if you can bear to live without the Sigma logo on your cap?

:D

Keith...you should have acted under memories of sweeping red dot, don't you? Sigma takes fine pictures even without gaffers tape, file tool and other identity hiding methods :D

So far I'm hoodless, but nice to know.

I'm into the habit recently of buying cheap generic replacement caps and stowing the original ones away. They're a little thinner to begin with.

does the hood fit with a filter on?

yes, that's what i'm doing for now, filter and then hood. i hate the idea of putting anything in the way of this great glass and sensor combo but every time i look at the lens it has lots of dust, perhaps because i carry it loose in my bag day to day.

thanks Dean, i think my resistance has worn down, this would go well with an X100
