Elliott Erwitt defined the New York street photography scene during the mid-20 th century. His famed images pluck the candid and peculiar from the everyday and present them with a wonderful sense of humor and irony. Erwitt began his career under the mentorship of legendary photographers Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy Stryker. Shortly thereafter Capa invited Erwitt to join his agency, Magnum photos. Erwitt’s fine art, journalistic, and commercial images have been in exhibitions, books, and publications around the world. He has been featured in one-man shows at such prestigious venues as the Museum of Modern Art, The Chicago Art Institute, the Smithsonian Institution, the Barbican in London, and the Royal Photographic Society in Bath. In the 70s, Erwitt began making documentary films including Beauty Knows No Pain and Red White and Blue Grass. He has also produced numerous television shows for HBO.

This lecture is sponsored in part b the Hotel Commonwealth.
