Anyone own the new elmart 28mm/2.8 asph lens and would like to comment on it's performance? I am interested in purchasing this lens for a wide angle.

I could not find any reviews except for E.Puts usual blurb. Good luck getting your hands on one, no one in the world seems to have one in stock.

It's a great piece of glass. Wide open there is a bit of vignetting, but nothing disturbing. Tack sharp and really small. Not sure what Putts has to say about it but I have no doubt it will be my standard lens on my M8. Shooting slide with it lately and the quality is amazing on film also. It's really at the lower end of the Leica price bracket so I suppose I can't complain! 🙂

Well, what can you say about 28mm elmarit lens? 🙂 it is sharp 😀 one thing to notice is contrast, it is very contrasty lens, I don`t know for good or for bad 😀

Harry's Pro Shop website indicates that it has the lens in stock (Link), reasonably priced in Canadian dollars.

I bought a M4 from Harry recently, and I must say that he's absolutely a great person to deal with. If I need a 28mm, I would have bought it from Harry right away...

Not to hi jack the thread, but have to say congrats on the M4. I saw it listed and it looked real good. I have to say I agree the Harry has been very pleasant to deal with via phone.

I have heard anecdotally that is is comparable in performance to the 28 ZM. The ZM is a great peformer but costs a lot less. Some say (again anecdote) that the 28 cron is sharper at f2 than the elamrit is at 2.8. This sounds like a good argument for the Zeiss, which is half the price. Either way, it is clearly a v good performer and compact to boot.

Sounds like the cron is the one if you want stellar wide open performance, but if not it would be a toss up btwn the ZM and the elmarit.

i have not heard good things about the new 28mm elmarit asph ...yet. I was going to buy one of the first but picked up a mint Version 4 instead and I'm glad I did (saved some money too).

V4 is fairly compact compared to previous models, but not as compact as the Elmarit Asph.

35mmdelux, what are some of the complaints you've heard about this lens?

He may be saying that he has not heard any user reviews for this lens....I could pick up an older 28mm but it's size is large and this new one has a short snout sticking out from the camera, great when your'e pulling the camera out from the bag.

Hi Kyle -

I read in Pnet that the new 28mm Elmarit asph just didn't perform as would be expected.

At the same time I decided to save myself $500 by buying a mint copy 28mm Version 4. As you know, the V3 and the V4 are considered top performers. As I saw it, the new Elmarit's advantage was only slightly reduced size. At the same time, I could buy a mint V4 for close to $1,000 versus $1,500 for the new "iffy" asph model. It was an easy decision.

I'll try to locate the link...

I have to say I'm a big fan of the little 28mm/2.8 ASPH. At least on film it performs very well indeed. It doesn't have quite the sharpest image at the focal plane. That my 28mm/2 ASPH certainly does, but overall I still prefer the new f/2.8. With the 28mm/2.8 ASPH, resolution and contrast are quite high, color rendition is excellent, and tonality is very smooth. At middle distances, OOF areas are portrayed with Gaussian smoothness, and the look is very similar to the Zeiss Biogon 28mm/2.8. At around 1 meter focus distance and below, the 28mm/2.8 ASPH lens' OOF character changes, getting a soft bright ring effect, but not unpleasant in my opinion. In night photography, the 28mm/2.8 ASPH flare resistance seems to be the best of any 28mm I have used over the years, compared to 28mm/2.8 Hexanon KM, 28mm/2.8 Biogon ZM, 28mm/2 Summicon M ASPH, 28mm/2.8 AIS Nikkor and 28mm/2.8 Series E Nikon lenses.

I've printed a number of 6x optical enlargements that are really quite good and am starting to make some 8.75x enlargements on 11X14" paper, but so far have only printed one image big. That print has dramatic content, but some camera shake and subject movement makes it a poor example of what any lens could do. I look forward to many years of using this Elmarit ASPH lens as my principle 28mm, using the Summicron ASPH for handheld low light photography, or when I want to limit depth of field by using f/2.0 aperture.

For my tests and examples of images shot with the new 28mm on M7 bodies, see my previous posts at:

Vlad Nachkebia also posted some examples there.
