Yesterday morning I used my ipad to check the forums, received an email, and replied to it. (I have a kijiji ad selling a bike.) Everything was normal. Then I decided to go for a ride, and eventually found myself in Campbellford.

It was a chilly day so I stopped at a Tim Hortons, got a large coffee, and checked my emails again with my ipad. There were 3 messages: a response to my reply about my ad from this morning, an alert from Microsoft Outlook saying that they thought someone else had accessed my hotmail account, with a link to change my password. (I did not click on that link.) There was a message on my Gmail account as well, again from Microsoft with the same security alert.

I figured the alerts were a scam. (Why would Outlook alert me to a Gmail problem?) I copied some of the message and googled it to see if others were getting the same scam. Read in 2 discussion groups to ignore, that it was a scam. So I ignored it.

Going back to my hotmail, I wanted to reply to the guy interested in my bike for sale, but a window popped up asking for my hotmail password. I entered it and it was rejected. Has my email account been stolen? What to do?

I've had both these accounts from back in the dial up days and they are sweet: franksbmw@.... Don't want to lose them, plus they are my contact emails for apple ID, Netflicks, etc.

The alerts are definitely Phishing - why would Microsoft misspell themselves as "Microsoft account team" (wrong capitalization). As far as the Apple alert ("Cannot Get Mail") is concerned, I get that every now and then on my iPhone, but it usually goes away within an hour or less without me doing anything. My suggestion would be to try again, and see what happens...

I've gotten similar messages when using the internet (either at Starbucks or Tim's) and at a TGIF in some American airport. Like you, I don't click to respond or to "recover" the account. After a while, in a different location, things were fine again.
