anyone else using one? any good cis solutions? anyone convert to black ink use only?

recommended papers?

Printer is setup, am wondering if there's a better 11x14 paper deal than this Costco 50 pack for $26?

Also, any suggestions on replacement inks or cis systems for the 1400? Thanks.

50 sheets
Base Material: Resin Coated Paper
Surface Finish: Gloss
Weight: 255 gsm, 69 lb
Thickness: 10.4 mil

I just picked up one of these printers too. So far I'm getting very good results, but it does take some time to nail down which papers and profiles to use for certain uses. So far My favorite images are printed on Ilford Galerie Classic Pearl, which is specifically for dye inks. On that paper, my best results are from using a Quad Tone RIP profile for black and white prints.
Haven't tried any CIS setup though.

thanks

thanks

have ordered a 50 pack of epson 11x14 photo premium paper. will let you know how it works with the claria included inks.

I've previously used the claria inks in an epson r380 for smaller sized prints, and was getting much better prints than the drugstore.

I've had mine for a while and sadly haven't gotten around to using it much yet. Just small 5x7 test prints, BW, and on cheap office max "professional photo paper" glossy, they actually came out pretty great. At first they were super dark, and I was a little mad, and figured ok, more time spent on profile settings in PShop etc, then an hour later they had dried nicely and lightened up.
For what its worth Im planning on ordering some of the Ilford inkjet paper to see how that goes, maybe thats something youd want to try? Theres the Epson papers as well : http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/pamCategory.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Professional
Though Ive never tried them.
If you find any info on converting it to a BW setup, Id definitely be interested in how it goes, for now Im just using the stock Ciara.

Thanks

I've heard OD has some good papers, made in Germany.

I found this link on another forum, about setting up to use the black inks only:

I've read a bit about inkjetfly and conecolor refill kits, but have no direct experience with them yet, but both seem to be cheaper than buying replacement Epson cartridges. I like that the conecolor cartridges are clear so you can see the levels, as I might set this up on a print server, where I may not get the ink level feedback window that you get with direct connection.

I just wanted to add that I've been using my 1400 with a CIS and UT14 all-black inks. Printing is done via Quadtone RIP. Been using this setup since last summer, and it has proven to be satisfactory- still haven't really got my curves really dialed in because I'm a rather infrequent printer :p

I am using one with a piezography inkset and have obtained excellent results. They are very capable printers when used as a dedicated b&w system in this manner. I would not however use it as a color printer with the supplied claria inkset as the prints tend to fade rather quickly.

Do not bother with a cis system unless you are planning on doing alot of high volume printing. They are more trouble than they are worth otherwise...Just refill/replace the cartridges when needed and your good to go!

Have been printing a lot, mostly on Epson 8.5 x 11 premium luster. Haven't had perfect b/w results yet, but close.

Usually use borderless mode, and print directly from Picasa. Can get good b/w by using text instead of photo mode, but depending on image, there can be some banding.

Using photo mode can give a slight purplish tint, even with a b/w image, and greyscale selected in the driver, plus is obviously using some other ink besides black.

For b/w, in text mode, am using -2 brightness, +9 contrast.

Blacks are true black though, but in photo mode, ad the expense of using a lot of black ink. Have noted to myself that very dark b/w prints still need to be done at Costco.

Color prints, especially landscapes, in photo mode are incredible.
