RFF has over 2,000,000 posts -
its like a treasure trove of information
which our native search engine is not so great at searching

You can get around that by using this search method on DuckDuckGo or Google
Leica M5 site:rangefinderforum.com
whatever you are searching for site:rangefinderforum.com

For all of that, the Leica M, and now FujiX and Sony7 series forums are ever more popular - and hard to find past posts in.

What do you think of expanded
Leica M
FujiX
Sony A7 series
forums - so that most cameras had their own forum?

For example for Leica M
M3
M2
M4
M5
M4-2/M4-P
M6
M6 TTL
M7
MP
M8
M8.2
M9
Mono
M240 etc ?

I am inclined to think this is a better way to go, as it would encourage more in depth discussion on a particular camera type.

BTW, behind the scenes we are working on a updated version of RFF which I hope will be online within 30 days.

Best,
Stephen

Stephen, I think this is a great idea. Should be a lot easier to find information about one specific camera model without sorting through endless or long threads and then just find one post about the camera model one sought to find.

Look forward to see the new RFF.
Thank you for your support for this great community.

I think you have to try to find a good balance between aggregated groups and expanded categories.

The caveat that I see with having detailed expanded categories, e.g., M2, M3, M4, etc... is if you have an OP about M bodies in general -- would you create a "General M" category? It creates a greater risk for cross-posting, and would require a higher degree of attention (and moving posts to correct categories) from moderators.

IMHO, the current Mirrorless sub-forums already work well.

Just my $0.02.

I think this is true for the most part, but I would really love dedicated M subsections.

Besides that, maybe there should be a dedicated Sigma Foveon section. I think it deserves some differentiation among other fixed lens and slr cameras due to unique sensor tech and small but dedicated cult following.

a forum for each model just to solve a search engine problem? that seems excessive. would it be enough to have one forum for general discussion and one for each series?

leica
- general m discussion
- film m bodies
- digital m bodies
- s series (?)
- x series
- t series
- q series

fuji x
- general fuji x discussion
- x100 series
- x-pro series
- x-e series
- x-t series
- x-a series

sony e
- general sony e/fe discussion
- a7 series
- aXXXX/nex series
- rx100 series
- rx10 series

I think you might want to be careful of too many categories. For example, I would put all of Sony in a single category. Otherwise a question and answer about E mount adapters might be buried in the nex or the A7 etc.

An A7 owner who used to have a nex would not see questions about the nex anymore if he just went to the A7 side; etc.

This forum has ALOT of categories, LOL, already. 🙂

As you point out, "site:" works great on this site. That's all I ever use. The native search never did work very well, but that's normal really.

I'd favour this kind of approach...

The expanded forums for Leica, Sony, Fuji has started. I hope to have them completed by Monday.

It will take awhile to get threads moved into the best and most appropriate new forums.

Once finished, the left hand links on the home page will link only to brands and forums in current production.

Visit discontinued camera forums via the forum home page.

Best,
Stephen

toooo confusing ... and it will be so hard to find the "vs" threads ... i think this is a really bad idea
even today there is not too much activity in a lot of the forums and adding more subgroups will not encourage more content

this level of segmentation is even beyond a "big" forum like DPR

Yikes. Is there a way to "hide" forums so you can have a reasonable list? Right now I have the impression I'm scrolling through a telephone directory.

I voted YES.
I don't think it will encourage more discussion, but tightly grouped subjects work better for me.

It may be nice also if each group (Fuji-X for example) had it's own "home" page to show the latest thread posts in it's groups.

Seriously, what is supposed to be gained by fragmenting Leica rangefinders into more than LTM, M series and M digital? Or by creating sub-fora for the Sony A7?

Could we also get Nikon F, F FT, F FTN, F2, F2S, F2A, F2AS, F3, F3HP, F3P, F3TI etc. sub-forums for the SLR section, please?

I use Google for searches now and think you shouldn't subdivide too much. Maybe digital M is different from film M, but is an M4 different enough from an M3 to warrant different groups? I don't think so.

I think this would work really well. Much better than a dedicated board for each and every Leica M for example.

RFF is primarily a rangefinder forum. The most successful and most popular rangefinder system is Leica. RFF's Leica main forum will be expanded to cover all Leicas and all Leica Mount cameras from other manufacturers as well.

The new direction of rangefinder like cameras (even if they are not rangefinders) are the so called mirrorless cameras, led by Sony and Fuji. Their popularity due to price and image quality seems to be having an impact on all rangefinder and even SLR sales. Leica, Nikon and Canon will have to move into this new territory or be left in the dust sales wise.

SLRs are represented at RFF for those who get tired of always talking about the main topic - rangefinders and rangefinder like cameras. No, we will not have SLR sub forums at RFF.

Take a look at the main forum page - http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/index.php?
many of the new forums are in place

There is still a lot of reorganization to do, give us some time.
