If you need speed, try a Contax N-Mirotar! 1/500th on EI400 in moonlight, that's what I call available light photography.

You non-Italians do know that "Gigantar" was one of Wolf Wehran's jokes, right?
He made it out of an enlarger condenser lens and some kind of adapter.
Incidentally, I read in one of the Kingslake books that it's impossible to make a well-corrected lens for forming an image on a flat film plane with an aperture of greater than f/0.5 because of the math of the "Abbé sine condition" -- at f/0.5, the rear principal plane of the lens would have to be so steeply curved that it would intersect the film plane, and at greater than that, it would go behind the film plane.

I'm impressed! Did the good people at Leitz ever have such a sense of humour?

Sometimes I suspect it may have evinced itself in their old system of five-letter code names -- e.g. NOOKY.
(On an only slightly related topic: ages ago, I used to patronize a local camera store that had both a well-stocked used department and a pretty young lady salesperson. One time I went in to ask about a lens for an old Canon RF, and she asked me if I knew what kind of lensmount it took.
I came that close to saying "Leica screw?" before realizing this remark might be misinterpreted as a change of subject...)

Was that before the current political correctness wave? It would have been merely risqué, but these days you could end in jail for less!
Talk about freedom of speech and affirmative action...
